Not that I agree with it but is it really any different to cow sheep pigs

Slaughter isn’t, abuse is. I fear some of these these workers don’t know much about horses and horses are inherently more difficult to handle, especially given how they have to be slaughtered which requires them to be headcollared and led- not always easy if they are unhandled and/ or very stressed.
I don’t know the slaughterhouse discussed here, but I do know the English one, and they use horse people for the handling and actual slaughter. And that makes a huge difference to welfare.

Do we really think abattoirs are nice places? They're awful for any animal sadly.

They don’t have to be awful- if you train your staff well, you consider the layout carefully and you handle the horses calmly and with respect, they're absolutely fine.
I spend a bit of time in the English one for work and I don’t have a problem with it. In fact, I have taken a horse there for someone else- I unloaded him, walked him into the room, handed over the rope and he was dead within 5 seconds, with a carrot in his mouth. I wouldn’t take my own horses there because mine are done at home, but that simply isn’t the practical reality for all horses.

Unfortunately they are “horse people”. Or rather have been prosecuted for cruelty to horses (not in the abattoir must have been owned by them). Makes you wonder why they went into this business in the 1st place other than to be able to be cruel to horses.
Father and son.
And shame on the people who send their horses to that fate.
I saw a comment on FB that seemed to justify it complaining about the cost of pts & disposal!

There is nothing wrong with horses going to an abattoir IF it is well run and everything is done correctly. As I have said elsewhere in the past, it was much better when there were many local abattoirs (as long as well run) . Back then your old lame horse had a value and so there weren't the volume of bin end horses that you see today that are passed from pillar to post. These horses went to the abattoir for meat. There is no issue with that as once its dead its dead. Again as long as humanely killed and the place is run properly.

Mine all go to kennels. To me its important how they are done and handled. What happens to the carcass afterwards is really immaterial. However appreciate each to their own.

I agree what happens to a horse after death is irrelevant .
I make every effort for them to die at home I hope I can always deliver that for them .
All this making them into diamonds stuff leaves me cold .
I so agree! I have always done right by mine I believe.

If I had a keepsake for every animal I owned my house would look even worse than it does now! 😂The same applied when I lost my husband. A few nice pics and amazing memories I need no more.

Sending horses for slaughter in a specialist abattoir: fine. Beating, terrifying and abusing them before and during slaughter: absolutely disgusting. I have taken horses to this place many years ago when it was run by different people and had no qualms about it then. Now it needs to be severely reprimanded and either sold to legitimate operators or completely restaffed.
