Abbatoirs, what are they like?

I've been to Turners in Cheshire. It was quick, without stress, humane, the horse had absolutely no idea what was coming, the vet and other staff there couldn't have been nicer or more professional, there was no blood, noise, smell, waiting or trauma. Stark reality is that it's never easy to have these large, beautiful animals put to sleep but this was a humane and civilised way to go about an unpleasant necessity.

Years ago I worked in a yard where they took a couple of horses to Potters. I really didn't want to go with the YO but had no option. In fact it was very well organised and none of the horses seem to sense what was going to happen. It wouldn't be my choice if it was my own horse but actually it was not as upsetting as I thought it would be. 2 years ago there was a fatal accident at the yard where I kept my mare at livery. I found the collection of the poor horse to be far more upsetting - and all the horses in the yard were really upset too (very nervous, calling to each other etc).

quite and it's also why we should never support a ban on slaughter in this country.

if i had the land and the PP/red tape/defra wouldnt be such a hassle, i'd open up an Abattoir...

there wouldn't be ANY shite/badly treated ponies/misnomers if I ran/owned it!

Believe me!!

this country SERIOUSLY needs more well run Abattoirs......

I was a bit confused there (I'm old).
I'm one of the 'cruel HHOers' who believe in NOT RESCUING meat horses from other countries, who believe that horses without a viable working future or an assured retirement should be PTS by an efficient and humane method.

I'm right with you on that one, Shils.
some people just cannot seem to grasp that being pts is NOT the worst thing that can happen to a horse. they obviously have no imagination, or blinkers on.

we need a slight shortage of horses in this country, then they would be valued more and treated better, imho.

I've just had a ten page assault elsewhere because of a post I put on here. Apparently those of us that believe that death is kinder than many options (including being imported by dealers or muppets to face an equally uncertain future here under the cover of 'rescue') make the 5hit stirrer want to vomit.

Ah well, it'll likely just be vegetables being regurgitated if she's so anti the meat trade.

I'm with you, Gtf. whoever it is obviously has NO IDEA of what can happen to a horse. There are some truly vile people out there. I would rather know my horse is in heaven than not know whether someone is slowly starving it to death, beating the **** out of it, shipping it god-knows-where for days... no, thankyou.

Unfortunately the idea of 'rescuing horses' can attract the worst kind of horse owner - the ones who like the kudos of saying 'I have saved Dobbin's life - what a nice person I am'.
Unfortunately, often Dobbin is unhandled, less than co-operative, comes with health issues (all outside new owner's scope), and has limited entertainment value, so quickly finds himself at the local horse sales, or passed from pillar to post.
I wish these would-be rescuers would become involved in one of the charities - WHW etc instead.

Well, they think the movement that horses do once dead is them writhing in agony..........
crazy.gif

So, it's cruel........
confused.gif

They're all on the sites now moaning about the mud and how they can only turn out once a week for an hour. The French horses mostly lived out, and certainly the meat ones did, so how cruel is that for something that is too young to ride?
And then they can't handle them and pass them on.........

Ooohhh, don't start me off again.........
