Well will try to keep this quick. My mare has just got over an abcess in her back foot, farrier was out last thursday to put shoe back on. He advised to stuff hole with stockholm tar mixed with cotton wool so she could go back out. Tack shop didnt have any of the solid tar so instead bought hoof putty and after speaking to shop assistant she said to make sure put cotton wool in hole first then putty on top. I did this last thursday, have had to re-do today as putty was leaking altho cotton seemed pretty clean still. Not sure whether to keep doing this altho putty seemed less in place today so will be surprised if still there later or whether to leave open and wash foot/hole out every night then spray with iodine?
Also after sorting this noticed shes got a large and quite deep slice in bulb of heel
am worried this will get infected I did squirt a load of iodine down it, would you just keep an eye on it or am thinking perhap poultice that bit tonight then put dermoline cream down hole.
