My mare has an abcess on her leg, its draining nicely she is on Antibiotics etc, her leg is not filling id say its a bout the size of a 10p a real lump, ive been cleaning it but ive been leaving it open, do you think it would drain quicker with a poultice?

As long as the wound is in a place where mud cannot enter, I would leave the wound open to the air and clean it, as you are doing.

Dont worry, you are doing everything right! x

Thanks m going to keep doing what im doing and if no improvement by fri i ill get vet out as if i dont you can bet your life she will be on 3 legs by xmas day!! que mega expensive vet bil lol!!

I wish you all the best. Are you sure that mud and/or bedding will not get in to it if its not covered? Did your vet say what to do? I would ring him or her if worried. I just lost my mare and know how these things into can escalate into deeper persistant infections even if you are doing everything right

My mare recently had an abscess on her neck and was very unwell with it. The vet said that I must leave it to drain but I had to keep her in and make sure her bedding was ultra clean. On this advice the 4 inch wound has healed beautifully and she is back to her normal boisterous self!
