mornign to all, one of my horses went to bed all ok las night, got down this am very lame on hind leg hopping , hot leg no swelling as yet, is a whimp so doesnt help to determine how sore he is, his bed looked a mess so unsure if has been cast in night ? farrier coming to take shoe off to rule out abcess , worried if not abcess then ? lymphangitis ? advice much appreciated thanks

With lymphangitis leg usually massive IME. If its came on that quick very poss It Could be abcess.Have had seriously lame horses that are abcesses.

Lymphangitis is best diagnosed by the presence of pitting oedema - that's to say the leg would be very, very swollen, and if you were to push you thumb into the swelling, it would leave an impression as if you had pushed your thumb into soft clay, and horses tend to be stiff rather than very sore with lymphangitis. So no, this doesn't sound like lymphangitis. It sounds more like he's got his knickers in a twist over night and knocked or wrenched himself. Cold hose it, and give him some bute and he should be right as rain soon.

lymphangitis is all about swelling, its the fluid not getting pushed around the lymphatic system and settling in the legs;) abcess is a possibilty if it seems to have come on suddenly, and it's amazing how absolutely hopping lame they can go overnight with one:eek:

hi thanks i am more suspicious of an abcess than lympgangitsis to be honest but sometimes jusy worth double checking , he is a real wimpy tb so the slightlest knock and he thinks hes really sore, he has had bute, poulticed and farrier coming to check him, i am also cocnerned he may have knocked himself as bed was scattered everywhere this am so could ahve pulled something, i checkedon him on my lumch break and seems comfortable enough , eating and bright . hopefully something minor.

Snap!!

Got mine in Sunday with a fat hind leg and very lame, but neither vet or farrier can find abscess or evidence of one :( so we're on antibiotics and bute for the leg and reassess with vet Thurs.

Previous abscess in front leg last year also had fat leg, but not as fat as this one and abscess was easily located before.

Been tubbing foot and packing with epsom salts in case of abscess but farrier saw her today and thinks infection in leg much more likely as she is more swollen from fetlock up to hock and less so in pastern.

Arrggghh :(
