I think my horse has an abcess but he is only lame in trot (not walk) but digital pulse is present and foot warm. Taking him to vet tomorrow but wondered if anyone else has had a horse that's only been lame in trot but turned out to have an abcess? Also my horse has only been 2/10 lame for around 2 weeks but suddenly got worse yesterday, anyone found this with theirs?

Yes.

The first and (so far, touch wood) only abscess Obi had started in Jan 2010 (ten days after his routine jabs).

He had had a trim in the December and his hooves were in great shape. Then suddenly went splat after his vaccines a month later .

He got a puncture wound and an abscess.

I got the vet after a week and he said just an abscess and give it time.

Two weeks later we tried oral antibiotics and Danilon.

A week later we X-rayed and found the infection was starting to eat at his pedal bone .

He was admitted for iv antibiotics for 5 days.

It took him until March to get over it all and put some weight back on.

In hindsight - I should have seen the Cushings stating then .

Two years later and he will still throw himself on the floor if a vet brings hoof testers near him and he is still twitchy about me handling that hoof in particular :(

Yes, my boy was sensitive on his front right but it wasn't constant but it went on for at least a couple of months, he was never lame at all and though he saw the farrier and vet for different things but there wasn't anything obvious when they visited.
He then developed an abcess on his left rear, and it was almost as if his immune system had been just about keeping the front under control but when he got the rear one the front developed fully.
It was a bit of a nightmare dressing the two but I was actually quite pleased as we then knew what it was and could treat it.
Btw they both healed really well.

Vet didn't want to dig it out, by the time I wised up and got a second opinion his tendon sheath was infected, and his DDFT I think, he went to the vet hospital for antibiotics and a tendon flush with a pretty bad prognosis, although I felt I had to try, but while there he colicked twice and I decided to PTS. Even had he not colicked he only had a 5% chance of being field sound, but I so wish he had been able to have that chance :(

Our sec b had an abcess that rumbled along for over 2 wks.Was fine in walk , but showed mild lameness in trot.Poulticed during this time and eventully burst out at coronet band. When we next saw the farrier he found the entrance site of infection in white band ..but the abcess did,nt travel out this way , which is why it took so long to come out.We turned her out through out this time as movement hopefully would help abcess work its way out .
