Hi everyone, I am looking for some advice from people in Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire. Me and my partner who is a farrier are moving up there in the next few months and we were wondering if anyone could reccomend where to advertise his business? We're going to go round the tack shops with business cards but does anyone know if there are any local papers or have any other suggestions? Any advice would be fantastic so thank you in advance! Also in stable yard.

The Press and Journal is the big local paper, also The Courier if you are thinking of South Aberdeenshire. The Courier has a horsey classified section on a Saturday. Other than that, there is Equi-ads, the free horse mag you can find in most horsey shops.

There's the findon RC website too, and places like Loanhead and country ways in Aberdeen itself have a wall u can put an advert up on.

And I'm highly miffed- where were u 2 months ago when I couldn't get a decent farrier up here for love nor money :-P

Scotads and press and journal prob best most horsey people check these.
Mearns Leader
Deeside Piper
(Millar Plant, Countryways, Mill of Uras, probably good tack shops

Im in Aberdeenshire can i book 2 mares in already. Just for a trim!!!!!

I dont think you would have to do a huge amount of advertising to be honest i think tack shops would be enough and maybe with scotads too. Scotads is free to advertise too.

Where are you moving to?

Defo Scot Ads and equi-ads.

I would go around the big livery yards too ie Ladyley's, Loanhead, Denburn, Goval and put up a notice, it wont take long for word to spread!!

There defo a shortage in this area.

also Facebook there is a page called Horsey stuff for sale in scotland, you could put a message on the wall there too, seems quite alot of folks go on it.

BTW there is also a email that does the round of most horse folk in aberdeen, i know the girl who sends it, it reaches a fair amount of folks, if you give me PM with his name and contact details and when he is avaible from, I will pass them to her to put on the weekly email, it normally has shows, horses/items for sale, up and coming lessons etc, really anything horse related.

I dont think paying for advertising pays. Posters at the livery yards, tack shops, vets etc and the weekly email that goes round will do the trick. He'll be busy busy busy in no time :o)

Thanks everyone, that's all been extremely helpful :-) We've not decided exactly where in Aberdeenshire we're moving to yet- is there any particular area that has a higher demand? Gleek- whereabouts are you? I'm sure he'll be able to fit you in if you're not too far away!

Think most areas struggle I am in Stonehaven and it took us a good few months to actually find someone however we have been told if we move off our yard the farrier won't come to us. North of Aberdeen struggles I think because most farriers travel from Dundee etc and they refuse to travel.

My sis is on the Stonehaven Riding club committee if you send me a pm I can get your details emailed to our members. I can also give your details to my yo (who is a bsja judge and goes to main events she could email your details out too)

Upper Deeside and Donside are desperate!! (Banchory/Aboyne/Ballater area.

As well as Millers at Midmar (they have a website too), try B&A Countrystore at Lyne of Skene. Also put the word out among the vets.

Thanks for all your help guys, that really is appreciated! Have pm'd you Speighty and Ggray. Hopefully see some of you in Aberdeenshire soon!

i am moving to fraserburgh in march to start my new shoeing business , all finances are in order and i am in regular contact with the local farriers association and local farriers regarding work . i am coming to see the situation all you desperate folk keep describing ands if all goes well will begin work earlier , it all depends on the tax office etc

Hi

As long as you have a permanent address you wont need to advertise much. I have 7 and no farrier ATM (inverurie). So if you could put me down on your list I'd be grateful. One full set studs excellent behaviour, 4 well behaved adult trims and 2 youngsters untouched just needing feet picked up by strangers and banged around. Thanks - oh and if you do advertise, scot-ads is probably the best and most cost effective.

Not sure if its been mentioned but I would suggest putting an ad in the local Pony Club newsletters as well (as well as RC's). PC's I can think of are Deveron, East Aberdeenshire, Aberdeenshire, Kincardine, Bennachie, Deeside and Moray.

Please PM me details as my farrier occassionally does a runner so might be nice to have a reliable farrier for a change!
