Abler

Protective licence? It's a patent, 20 year lifespan regardless of whether costs are recouped or not, though if it is seriously unlikely that they won't be obviously most will either not get to or be taken through the patenting process. Licensing is different.

I suspect more formulations will come along but they don't seem to be rushing that's for sure. Even this paper from 2015 suggests an expected influx http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jvim.13578/full

Id be interested to know what is stopping abler going through the proper channels and becoming a proper generic if they can prove it works as well.

Maybe because it already sells so well, the cost of doing so isn't worth it for them?

Quite likely :) but I hope this thread has clarified that pharma aren't always screwing us over, particularly if those doing it cheaper are relying on the illegal market to do so ;) rather than the established system we have. Fwiw for most drugs once they go generic up to. 90% reduction in price can be expected through competition, this may yet happen of course

As daft as it may sound maybe Abler could be the reason they are not.It could be argued that cheap illegal access is stopping others bothering to go through the process of launching a competitor ,to be honest Peptizole is nearly 20% cheaper than GG but not made any progress as its what the vets will prescribe that influences its use to some degree. Who do you think finances a lot of their corporate garments they all seem to wear.

The math do not add up. Before trying abler (with full support of my vet because she said she didn't want to prescribe GG because of the price!) I bought 100grams of pure omeprazol from a pharmacy (with prescription of vet) for 22euro's.

So if you say with the 100 or what generic pills, that is a commercial price, and we're paying too much even for that!

The thing is, pure omeprazol does not work because it has no liner. It gets destroyed in the horses gut straight away and thus has no effect. Both Merial and Abler have designed a "liner" that makes sure the strong ph of a horses stomach (around 4ph) does not destroy it so it is actually absorbed in the intestines.

The liner is the thing Merial has patented, as well as the cinnemon flavour. Before I gave the abler I have tested the liner myself, both with citric acid and HCL acid (around same ph as horses stomach) they lasted more than 2 hours without dissoving so good !

What BI did with peroglide/prascend has taken this practice to another level of stashing their pockets as it needs no liner. They basically designed another package which said "horse" and...bingo...no vet is able to prescribe peroglide anymore because of the cascade and now horseowners are paying 4 times the original price
