Although I already have 4 beautiful dogs, I find myself debating another Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy that my friend has presented to me. I am not sure I would want a male puppy for a few reasons....as in how they "mark" their territory while on walks A LOT. I have a husky male already and our walks are full of lots of stops. I have been told by a couple people that if I were to neuter at an early enough age, this type of behavior could be eliminated(male pup won't lift leg). Is there any truth to this? Would a male pup not lift his leg to pee if he was fixed early? This is probably a very dumb question. ;-)

My BT was 'done' when he was nine months. He still does 'baby wees' occasionally but mostly cocks-a-leggy!:D A CBR is a med-large dog and I would be reluctant to neuter too early and tbh don't think it will make any difference. Boys will pee, frequently, on walks, if it irritates you, then wait and get a bitch instead.:)

Ok. Thank you! Yeah, I think maybe should wait longer, but around here people have been getting pups fixed as early as 8 weeks!!! I have never heard of that! Went to a shelter to volunteer and saw some aussie pups with an incision and found out the pups were spayedNneutered. They were soo small!

Hello,
Winston my cocker spaniel got 'done' at 6 months. He did not cock at all till he was about one and a half. He sometimes cocks when we are out on walks in the village but a bit half heartedly. He never has cocked (not that I have seen) when we go to the farm where there are three entire male dogs who cock quite a lot who he is out and about with. I am pleased he doesn't seem to cock (even though he is a cocker ;) )

Firstly, bitches often mark more than males! :D If I lead walk any of my boys (or girls for that matter!) from the front door, they are allowed one pee and then they are expected to keep walking on a loose lead for the ten minutes or whatever it takes to get to wherever they are going to have a free run. Once off lead they can pee/mark as much as they like!

If I were to ALLOW them to mark on lead whenever they wanted, then yes, I'm sure we would be stopping every few yards. It's a training thing....a case of what you decide to allow and what not to. So, if you want a male Chessie pup that doesn't mark everywhere, then train it not to! Same as you would train it not to in the house. :)

When I currently walk my male husky, I do not stop for him. I let him go, like you said, before we leave, and thats all I want him to do. If he starts to lift his leg on a walk, I do not stop and let him, I keep walking and then he will normally continue with me. Its just that he tries to a lot. I just didnt know if this type of thing could be stopped by fixing before the instinct to is there. Meaning a younger age to get fixed? I know every dog will most likely, but my husky was fixed at around 1 year 6 months. He had gotten to my female dog in her first heat and we were told by the vet to get her fixed right away! Very risky, but luckily all went well. She was only 7 months and I did NOT want her having pups. This was years ago, he is 8 now. I thought that since he was older getting fixed that he may "mark" more than a male dog that was fixed at a younger age. Dont know if that is true or not.

Well if it helps my female dog cocks her leg just as much as the boy dog on walks! I try not to stop boy dog marking as if he feels he has not gone enough outside will go in the house! Both are 4 and were neutered at about 6 months although we only got boy dog at 1 year old
