Abscess and swollen stifle in yearling :(

Hi all..not my normal "showing off how cute your youngster is" post, this time looking to see if anyone has ever dealt with anything similar?

(Before I start, vet is booked in to scan stifle area tomorrow)

Here's a calendar of events:

Thursday - Turned out in the morning fine, came in dog lame. Looked abscessy on back right, so hot poulticed overnight.
Friday - Poultice comes off with grey/black smelly goo. Farrier comes anyway for pinch test and no reactions. Looking less lame already, but I kept him in for the day as I had the physio booked the next day anyway
Saturday - (Still hot poulticing, poultice came off clean) Trotting up much better, physio says some soft tissue damage on the inside of the leg (forgive me, she would've used a technical term for it that i've forgotten) probably from skidding around the muddy field (some very long skid marks in field to prove it!) but otherwise not worried at all.
Sunday - Dry poulticing now as has come off clean every time since the first day. Turn out as normal - still looking like hes improving lameness wise
Monday - Same as Sunday but less lame
Tuesday - Restricted turnout day at my yard. Kept in all day - in the evening noticed a swelling around stifle (same leg as abscess) and lame in walk again. Swelling wasn't hot to touch, but he wasn't a fan of me touching it either
Wednesday (today) - Trotted up again, seems to have gone down hill. Looks a different kind of lame to before, doesn't look abscessy - physio agreed a scan could rule out any OCD lesions in the growth plate, or even potentially a strained patella ligament (which would be typical, as my cat has just had an operation on his medial patellar ligament, because he was lame too!)

Pain killer wise - I haven't given bute or danilon yet, as didn't want to hinder the abscess coming out, and then didn't want to mask anything for the farrier/physio and now the vet too. I have just been giving him a little bit of my older horses joint supplement from Trinity Consultants to help with inflammation if it can. To be honest on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday he didn't look lame enough to need any pain killers!

Now, as he was better after turnout, and is only a yearling - i've turned him out today. If the vet says box rest and bute tomorrow then that's what we will do I guess!

Not really sure what i'm looking to get out of posting on here other than rambling, but feel like I at least needed to write things down in order to see if i (or anyone else!) can make sense of them or has ever had anything similar with a horse his age.

(I will see if i can get the video from this morning posted on here at some point - annoyingly didn't video the other days when he looked to be improving!)

I don’t think there is much you can do immediately other than box rest and get a good vet in to evaluate. You obviously need to rule out more serious stuff with the stifle. Fingers crossed it’s just a pulled muscle or some thing from hooligan behaviour - but I’d treat it as serious until you are told otherwise

Is he out with others ? Could he have been kicked ?
He is out with others yes, he may well have been kicked, though they are a pretty settled herd. He is OK with me touching the outside of his leg, just sensitive on the inside which is why we went more down the skidding around route. (pic of said skid marks hopefully attached below - theyre well over 1m in length)

Gloi -

The abscess might have been a coincidence and the lameness from the stifle. Depending where they are, abscesses sometimes burst out without any previous signs or lameness.
Sorry Gloi I started replying to this in my last post and then got distracted and just left your name there! I think you're right in that it's a coincidence, which is a shame as I guess I'd have got the vet sooner if I didn't think i'd already cracked it with poulticing!

sorry hadnt realised the swelling was on the inside. They are accident prone when they are that young, its still possible hes gone bum to bum with another while playing and take a bit of a bang, or pulled it slipping/kicking out. Im always relieved when a youngster makes it to grown up age . Hope you get some answers tomorrow

Just got back after vet visit - suspects OCD lesions in the joint and wants Xrays on both stifles to confirm and then will be booked in for surgery. :(

Not quite what I wanted to hear, but I guess as least it has been caught early?!
