Abscess at heel bulb

Ive had that, can be quite sore for the horse. It should heal up fine, from the inside out. In your case depending of origin and tract of abscess, might cause frog to shed. Keep it clean and use whatever antibacterial sprays you have daily.

Dealing with the same at the moment, it has drained, the heel is still sore but improving slowly, the wet ground is not helping it toughen up, usually I would expect it to do so fairly quickly.

Thank you both for your replies, yes the wet weather is a pain, I’m wanting to keep it wrapped up but it’s not going to dry, I have been packing it with red horse hoof stuff which is fab and using their honey heel cream, hopefully it will flake off soon, thanks again

The one here walked out this morning just about sound for the first time, I stopped wrapping it as nothing was going to keep it dry, he is in overnight, has it cleaned and treated when he comes in and that seems to be enough to help, his has lingered for a while we thought it had all gone through the heel, then the farrier found a bit more under the sole, the next visit thought it gone but he was still not right which we thought was the sore heel only to have another load come out of the heel, just hoping this is the end as it has been a long haul.

I don't poultice but I sometimes soak to weaken the skin. Average probably 3 days from start of lameness but it can be a lot longer.

.

was your horse showing lameness , how did you know it was an abscess, sorry i suspect my horse has one, not really dealt with one before, vet and farrier aware by the way x

You can't know for sure, but typically abscess lameness are very sudden in severe onset with no injury or swelling.

If in doubt always call your vet, a broken bone inside the foot will give the same symptoms.

Can i ask you guys how long you poulticed before the abscess broke out please x

A stereotypical abscess has a reasonably rapid onset and an acute lameness. Quite an alarming level of lame if you have never seen one before. If I get these then they are hot tubbed and poulticed immediately and I won’t leave a horse longer than 24-48 hours without the farrier releasing the abscess. Dealing with one of these is a judgement call that comes with experience, because if it’s not an abscess then it’s a serious injury that needs immediate vet attention.

On the other hand you can just get small grumbling abscess that cause no/low level lameness that aren’t obviously abscess. They generally track out on their own, often at the coronet band.

Hi, my horse was lame but there wasn’t any obvious signs no heat and no swelling but after two days her whole lower limb swelled up so I looked for an obvious entry or puncture wound I couldn’t find anything however there must’ve been something there, after the swelling didn’t go down following three days of Danilon I called the vet and they couldn’t find anything wrong, the next day I noticed the split and the swelling has gone down so obviously it had burst the day before and the vet didn’t see it, I kept it clean and dry and out of the mud but now it seems to be re-attaching so all is well

Did the vet prescribe Danilon?

It's generally reckoned these days to be counterproductive to use anti inflammatories with a suspected abscess,
