My mare had a stone bruise/possible abscess 2 months ago, vet and farrier have seen to her and she was given the all clear after a month and a half off, things were going well but suddenly became lame again (only in trot/tight turns and not consistent). She is a very hardy native with good hard feet so am not sure if the abscess was not done working it’s way out perhaps, or may be something completely different all together.

I did find a mark on her hoof today that is new, I am not sure if it is an abscess or not as not too experienced with them, I have pictures if there is anyone who is experienced with them that could perhaps have a look and give me their 2 cents on if it does look like one or not?

Vet is coming first thing tomorrow morning, so was more just peace of mind for me so I can have a rough idea If it could be an abscess so I can stop worrying, never Google horse lameness when you are already worried!!

Bruises in the sole can take a really long time to heal. Generally abscesses make them hopping lame rather than slightly, but again not true in every case. Personally I prefer the farrier over the vet in such cases. Hope it works out ok.

Oh really? I have wondered if it is deeply bruised after how dry a summer we have had the grounds been rock solid. She had the farrier 5 days ago who gave her the all clear but since then a new mark has shown up on her sole. Not sure if it could be a bruise coming to surface after a trim? I have no idea. Will give the farrier a message thank you!

It’s sore when I press on it and only appeared today, is quite small but is the only bit she reacts to when I press on the hoof.

If there wasn’t lameness in trot I wouldn’t think there was anything wrong as she is acting completely normal part from that.

Yeah thats definitely been an injury at some point, I would say a bruise. That could be the issue, rock hard ground ? Maybe ?

We have had a very very dry summer here in the Uk with all the rocks coming to the surface and the ground being brick hard so it is very possible she’s stood on something or gotten bruised from it, specially as she is a very happy hacker

How did you get on out of interest?

its been a bit of a journey! turned out not to be an abscess but a bruised soul, vet trimmed away the bruise but it caused her to walk slightly off which then caused an imbalanced hoof, she had a full lameness work up ect and that’s what the x-rays showed. She got corrective trimming from farrier every 4 weeks for a while with rehab walking, she was sound on the hard ground on the lunge at her last check up, and is hacking soundly thank god, and now it’s slowly building her fitness up she did a month of walk hacks now we are slowly adding some trot.
The vet was 99.9% sure the imbalance was the problem, but for that very slight chance it’s soft tissue damage just from where she nerve blocked I need to build her up very slowly, we are up to 5 minutes of trot now so touch wood fingers crossed, I’m hoping she’s almost back to normal 🤞
