So, are 4 year old welsh section B gelding hasnt been him self for a few days, then yesterday just under his jaw swelled up to the side of a golf ball, called vet out straight away today. they came and felt all inside and outside of his mouth, they found an abscess, a very big one! they made a slit under his jaw about 5cms and the abscess poured out. the smell was awfull! he is now left with an open wound that i need to flush twice a day and keep clean, they said it will take about 2 weeks to close up! the vet said that 2 of his teeth are loose, if he is no better in 5 days he will have to go for a head&mouth scan to see the 2 loose teeth in detail as they might be infected as the bone is soft. they then will have to be removed as they think that is what has caused it. he is back to his old self and eating and drinking much better, he is on danalon and antibiotics.

my little girl is heart broken, she backed him herself and they are doing so well, will this be able to be carried on? will he be able to be ridden again? if so how long before this can happen? the only thing that matters is that he gets better.

really need abit of advise on his future.. have any of your horses/ponies ever had anything like this. how will his future end up? being ridden, bits ect?..

please no criticism, all checks are done and okay.
thank-you in advance.

Sorry to hear what you've all been through but I don't think anybody on here can tell you what you want to know.

Your best bet would be to make an appointment with your vet for a phone chat so that you can ask him all your questions and hopefully get some answers.

Hope it all works out for you. :) x

thank-you for your reply.
i speak to my vets offen, but they said it is all just a waiting game to see how everything turns out. just wanted to know if anyone had been through it.

thank-you again. x

My friends horse had an Abcess caused by a broken tooth, went to Newmarket and had tooth out. Took a while for it to heal as you'd expect but came back to work and was fine.
It's just a waiting game so your daughter shouldn't worry :)
