Another small update, he was a bit subdued over the weekend so was on colic watch for a while. Back to his normal self as of last night. Was due to go and pick him up today but started feeling ill over the weekend and I have managed to catch Covid! What timing when I've managed to avoid it for 2 and a half years! I have asked them to keep him until at least tomorrow, maybe Wednesday, as don't want to risk the drive, about 100 mile round trip, feeling lousy, or have to try and care for him until I feel better.
Sounds promising! Hope your not feeling too lousy! Im sure they wont mind an extra day or two ❤️

sorry to hear you are now unwell - but maybe a couple of extra days in the vet surgery will take the stress away from you, allowing you both to heal a bit faster.

The boy is home! Picked him up this morning, he was most disgruntled not to be allowed in the field when he got back, but did get a lovely greeting from the rest of the herd. No idea how to add a picture on here or I would do.
so onwards now to box rest and rehab with fingers crossed for a successful road to recovery. Thank you to everyone for your kind messages ☺️

Hi there, just popping in to ask how the recovery went/is going? Unfortunately it looks like my boy will be going in for this next week, based on the MRI results. So I'd love to hear how yours is recovering? Hope all is well and thanks for sharing your post here to give me some hope during this time!

Hi! sorry to hear you may be going through surgery with your boy. Our lad did an 8 week box rest, lots of bandage changes which required sedation at first, but with hand grazing and short walks allowed, and to be honest I was dreading it as he has previously not done well when stabled, however he rather surprised us all by being an exceptional patient. He was then meant to be on controlled turn out but he was stressing, pacing and getting himself in a complete state so he moved to day turn out with the herd after discussion with the vet.

He still isn't sound on a sharp turn to the left, or in trot. Although gallop, rear and buck like a loon is fine! We have had some ups and downs with the new hoof wall growth splitting when growing down and causing him some pain. We have transferred to a local amazing farrier who specialises in rehab work and hopefully is now really starting to improve soundness wise, fingers crossed! He is sporting a large patch of acrylic on his hoof with layers of kevlar covering the missing bit of hoof and to provide some structure for the new growth.

It has been stressful, and there are times I have questioned whether I have done the right thing going through with the surgery, but on balance I am glad we went through with it, despite the cost! We have kept a photo diary of his hoof all the way from first bandage to change to now, and it has been fascinating to watch the change and the healing of the hoof from the inside out. Be prepared for a significant wound, it took me by surprise a bit.

Feel free to drop me a message if you want to chat, or see any of the pictures. Can never work out how to share them on here. Oh, and I would definitely recommend making use of this forum, for both the wealth of knowledge and the support it provides just when you really need it.

Oh @Moonberry thank you so much for your reply and for sharing these details. It has really been an odyssey to get to this point where the pedal bone issue has been found, it's been over a month of not knowing and mysteries now just coming into focus. Its been a lot to take in but the positive experiences really do give hope. I definitely will be in touch and will make my own post on the forum, I've tried many times but emotionally its been such a rollercoaster so far! Many thanks again and fingers crossed for your guy's continued recovery.
