the farrier came and took the shoe off, and dug around, cant find anything, but he's very very sore, and reacting violently
very sore even when i touch the foot with my fingers
he was shod on tuesday so thought it might be nail bind, but when the farrier was originally putting the shoe on he was uncomfortable, i thought nothing of it, but maybe there was pain there
i was going to tub it, but as soon as the hot water came near the foot he freaked

im thinking abscess? but im not sure, and now im worrying...a

If it was nail bind he would be getting progressivly lamer. if it was a nail prick it would have been resolved when the farrier removed the shoe..

Either way with a prick a bind or an abcess he would be lame on all types of ground.

If there is a lot of heat in his foot I would go for an abcess, this year has been the worst in my memory for them, the wet ground is making horses feet soft and vulnerable to penetration from slivers of stone or wood.
This week our vet dug around in one horse and couldn't find a thing, the abcess' seem to be deep inside out of reach. this is probably around the sixth time this year we have treated a horse for them, normally we get one or two not six.
All you can do is wait for it to come out, poultice it with mag sulphate or the stuff equine America sells that is brown and gunky and stinks but works better than anything else!
Use a piece of nappy with it on then duct tape over the top.
Even if it was a nail prick it sounds infected now....though doubtful if the horse showed pain when being shod. I bet it was quietly brewing and the shoeing just made it sore-er.

HI

I can't speak with any authority on hoof absess as I am quite ineperienced but something in your post struck a cord and i thought is was worth sharing.

A few years ago I was a dental nurse and I know for certain that one of the questions dentists always ask is does the tooth react to hot. If the asnwer was yes then it was the start of an absess. I guess it dooesn't matter what part of the body human or horse absess react the same way, so when you said your horse reacts to hot water I would most definately say that your horse has an absess based on the reaction to heat.
Hope this is useful.
