I have a TB with the usual TB feet!
We have discovered he has come crap stuck in old nail holes :( so doing the usual poultice and stuff is starting to come out!
Although i think i may have to restrict his grazing while ground so wet becuase his little feet just cant cope :( Quiet upset about this becuase he will only be out for a couple of hours and i think what kind of life is that for a horse! anyway he doesnt mind, he seems to prefer being in with lots of hay and nicley rugged up and warm
Anyone got any advice on poulticing soft TB feet? a lady on my yard said take the poultice off in the day to stop the foot getting even softer but hmm ?! no ideaa
:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Unless the farrier was criminally insane or untrained, the nail hole will be through the hoof wall (similar to our insensitive nail tips). Hence, no abcess will form as there is no living tissue. Stop poulticing, leave his feet alone. Make sure he has a good, broad-based mineral supplement and massage the coronary band daily to stimulate hoof growth.

The farrier we had was very bad and did alot of damange to my horses feet, he needed intense physio to fix all his back before it was even sound enough to ride
we have now swapped farrier to a top olimpic one (ian huges) who has done the world of good for his feet but its only been a couple of months..

Same as Classicalfan, dirt in nail holes isn't going to cause a problem, though poulticing to get it out will. If you feel you must do something, & I wouldn't, then maybe once a week put some hoof disinfectant around & in the holes, though personally I'd leave well alone unless the farrier suggests otherwise.

Stop worrying so much & put him out. To be honest I'd be more worried about the effect of him standing in nearly all the time than I would about him getting dirty feet, TB or not!

I am/was very inexperienced so did not understand why he was lame all the time and i thought i had a good farrier (ha ha ha!) Only when i switched, i really knew what had gone on. He had basically made him walk around on his heels and he got thrush too :( all better now but obviously and my horse being the pain in the arse he is gets it!!
:confused::rolleyes:

tbs feet aren't any worse than other horses, they just need the right nutrients and farrier to keep their feet right. Did your farrier recommend poulticing his feet? If not I would have a word with him about your concerns.

Was your boy very lame ? My mare had an abcess in her foot last week and was so lame she couldn't put her foot on the ground. The vet found the abcess, released the pus, she was poulticed, poultice wrapped in Duct Tape and turned out. After 3 days we changed to dry poultice for a couple days and farrier is due to come and re-shoe her and plug the hole. She was sound almost as soon the abcess was lanced.

Do you mean the soles of his feet are very soft? If so I wouldn't want to be poulticing them, they'll only get softer.

You know what I would do if it were my horse
I would tub it with epsom salts after that place his foot on a clean towel to dry

paint some hoof hardner ( blue stuff ) from vet over his sole to harden it

Animalintex poultice over the base of the nail hole where pus coming out only use a small piece like a 3-4 inch square so the rest of the foot not wet ( again this is what i did ) with lami mare 2 weeks back when abscess burst out coronet band secure with duck tape stick it to the hoof
then

night time put nappy on and duck tape
day time if he has to go out i would buy a second hand pair of old mac boots same small poutice emediatly over hole secure with tape put the old mac boot on then gamgee round his leg which would go over the top of oldmac the then vet wrap down as far as you can almost going over the old mac boot.

if not the old mac i would use nappy then duck tape over and over overlapping forming a boot. this will be water tight i know i done this many times.

true but sometimes you have too , as above tub 10 mins max with epsom salts
dry foot and hoof hardner straight away as i explained above this is what i am doing with my lami mare .
and her feet have not suffered with softness

also

equimins hoomender 100% improves the feet strength or money back
as does seaweed
and formula4feet ( my mare on this ) at moment with lami

Does your horse just have mud in the nail holes or is it an abscess that has burst out of an old nail hole? The gunk will really stick of infection if it is an abscess.
