Last Wednesday horse was hopping lame. Had vet next day who initially said strain etc but following day was 3 legged so thought must be abscess. Hot poulticed from then on with not much return on poultice. Farrier is very busy and not local so couldn't come anytime soon so got vet again. Vet located very sore spot near toe with hoof testers and heat and pulses in foot. He dug a hole as deep as he thought was needed, but no pus came out. He said to continue poultice. That was Wednesday. Have had some yuk smelly stuff on poultice but not loads. Horse is now sound in walk but still head bobbing lame every few strides in trot.
What shall I do? I was expecting a fountain of pus when vet dug hole. Does it need more digging? Or shall I just leave and keep poulticing?

Are you hot tubbing as well as poulticing? if not try and do it twice a day, they don't all produce impressive amounts of gunk so keep going for another day or two, then dry poultice for 2 days or until nothing at all is coming out, turn him out as much as possible to get it moving and get the farrier booked in for this week just in case you need him, it is still early days so some lameness from the soft tissue damage is not unexpected.
