As per title, when I have dealt with abscesses in the past there has usually been some heat in the foot and/or swelling on the lower leg. Is it possible for a horse to be lame from an abscess with no heat or swelling?

I have had deep abscesses with no heat or swelling so if you think that is what it is don't rule it out just because it is not presenting "normally" they don't follow a rule book.

Likewise. I've seen a fair few and plenty without heat.

Thanks both. Vet is up in the next hour or so and I am praying for puss. I am thinking abscess as no improvement with rest and bute (thought it was bruise to start with), but have usually seen some heat or swelling when he has had one in the past.

i'd an absess sufferer and he never had heat, they just used to burst through the top of his heel or hoof

Had one three weeks ago which took us by surprise. No lameness, no swelling, no heat, no pain observed when doing hooves - picking out foot ready to leave for a clinic and drawing hoofpick down cleft of frog, it suddenly started spurting pus. First time in over 35 years of horse ownership that I have had that one. No fast rules when it comes to horses!
