My poor pony seems to have an abscess right by his anus.
It’s a sore but also a bit swollen too.
I’ve been bathing salt water and putting purple spray on. Debated sudocrem but worried about bedding and poop sticking to it?
Should I be doing anything else?
He’s bright and perky in himself, eating fine, doesn’t seem to mind me cleaning it too much.

That’s spooky. My old mare has a sore on her ladyparts at the moment too. I’m pretty certain she caught it when she was rubbing her bum when she was rugless recently. Because shes a bit feral she wouldn’t let me clean it so I had to get the vet to sedate and have a look. She’s on antibiotics and antibacterial cream now.

Interesting.
He’s not particularly itchy - if he itches it’s his head not his bum! He’s naked so can’t be rug related.
Only thing that’s been different this week is they were wormed with Pramox but that would be a really weird reaction if it was that ?
if it wasn’t swollen too I’d not be so worried but there’s definitley a lump there ?

Vet - please look at my peri rectal abscess thread on here from last week! If there is more going on internally than you can see there is a high risk of sepsis if it bursts the wall into the rectum.

No other signs of pinworm at all so hopefully not that but will bear it in mind Thankyou.
No trouble passing droppings thankfully.
I don’t have any silver spray or flamazine unfortunately and no local tack shops open today - alternatives to purple spray would be sudocrem, honeyheel, Vaseline, Lincoln green antibacterial gel.
Just to reiterate, will be calling vet in the morning (unless there’s any change when I go up later of course)

Thought I would update.
By Monday morning the swelling had gone so I held off on calling the vet, given as he was still well in himself.
I continued to bathe it with salt water and apply sudocrem and other than the new skin growing back you’d never know he’d had a problem.
So no idea what the issue was, and if it had changed at any point/got worse/comes back vet would of course have been involved but in this instance he seems to be ok touch wood :)
