Hey all my mare came in from the field tuesday night on three legs with alot of heat in her hoof she is prone to abscess so i hot tubbed it and polticed it and gave her a danilon to ease the pain as my farrier couldnt get out till wednesday morning. he came out and has dug a hole for it to drain but advise it is very deep so i need to draw it out and he recommended using a bran poltice. I have done that but it is hard to see if anything is coming out as there is bran everywhere. my mare seems to be still very sore on it has anyone got any advice??

Yes Get the vet asap:):)

She needs antibiotics. You don't want the infection to get into the pedal bone. Also I would get the vet to see it too in case more needs to be dug away. Bran is an old fashioned poultice works , but I would switch to animalintex the foot shaped ones tub twice a day with empsom salts and box rest her.

I am currently coping with an abscess but its not one with anything really coming out, its a lami one

I have spoken to the vet he knows this horse very well and has helped me for the last 6 years with her since she was 6 months old on average she has about two abscess a year this is due to her breed and her very big flat feet, i will swap it to animalintex tommorow as bran is very good for drawing out any infection.

second the advice above, get some sterile lintex - the kind with thin plastic coating, will be better and much easier for you to handle.
my mare is also very prone to hoof abscesses :-(, and 2 years ago we had a very near miss where one tracked up not out and was just mm off the pedal bone!! thanks to a fab vet she was fine but was pretty scarey!
disposable nappies can also make a useful poultice, laid with epsom salts or old fashioned soap & sugar mix which will really help to draw out the gunk. even when the poultice is totally clear I would also continue for a min of another 24 hours to make extra sure.
hope all goes well for her x

For horses that are prone to abscesses - I would think about looking into what's in your forage. Often, funky mineral levels have a knock on effect where horses can be prone to abscesses.

At the very least, have a look at the diet and see if anything needs adjusting.

I have discussed her diet with the vet his is happy with it and has advised that as she is a clydesdale with very big flat feet unfortunatly she is going to have problems

no i appricate that but with her big flat feet and the very wet weather we are having at the moment it only takes a little stone to work it way in which isnt hard and before you no it you have an abcess

True - but we hoof nerds have found time and time again that adjusting the diet and balancing the mineral leads to a more healthy and resistant hoof.

My Tank is an Ardennes x ID. He has had a couple of abscesses in his time. He's had them in spring (rather than the winter where he's stood in a bog for months) and he hasn't had any for the last year, since I got the diet right.

If you are happy with the diet, then fab. But it's another avenue to pursue if you need one :)

Interesting thankyou are you using any supplements? she is currently fed Calm and condition, chaff carrots and a bit of water to dampen the feed
