Hi

My lad has had an abscess in his foot which came out near his toe - it's healing well however he has a large hole!! I've been plugging the hole using poultice and cotton wool after a week of tubbing and bandaging his foot! Just wondered what others have used? It's ok whilst it's dry but the wet weather is sadly coming :-( heard mixed reveiws about equiboots any experiences or techniques for plugging holes
would be great!!
Thanks x

Do I take it he does not wear shoes? My mare often gets abscesses, but when it's been on a front foot I get a pad put on under her shoe and leave it until the hole has healed up. She is not shod behind, so on her hinds I have just had to keep cleaning the hole out and waited until it has grown over enough to risk going out on rough / stony ground.

I use a Shires poultice boot whilst in the poultice stage and have found it to be brilliant. You could not ride in it, but it protects the foot in the field.

Good luck!

Had the same a month ago when it was wet ground blue spray drip of Stockholm tar then push cotton wool in more Stockholm then few layers of veteran sorted mine had a big hole in toe too the wrap will just come off on own Stockholm should give it enough time to heal & harden

Same here, hole about the size of a 20p in the sole just near the toe.

Once I'd stopped poulticing, I got a plug of cotton wool, made it all nice and sticky with a paste made of manuka honey and tea tree oil, packed it in and then sealed over the top with a bit of mud. Initially I changed it every day, then every 48 hours, then 3 days, then I just left it to drop out of its own accord as the sole regrew. Horse lives out and the weather was fairly wet. I think the stickiness of the honey kept it nicely in place.

Our farrier advised us to use stockholm tar - very gunky and you need towear gloves but good stuff. Need to make sure you buy the thicker consistency stuff though.

Lami came out staple this morning with fat leg, vet came out did tests and took shoe off and we have a little finger sized hole on his outer hoof in the inside. So poulticing.

Skoosh of iodine spray, then cotton wool soaked in iodine plug with stokholm tar over the top and pushed into form the last layer, i do ise a hoof boot until the shoe goes back on
