Hi everyone needing some advice/help!
My horse had an abscess a few months ago it all cleared up then about 5 weeks ago he came in hopping lame.. from the symptoms myself and farrier think it's an abcess.. but puss came out for the first few days out of the old crack and he hasn't had any puss for a month and is still lame. He has been getting politics on twice a day for 5 weeks now.. He is sore on his heel bulb when I push a certain area??
Help please

I had a persistent abscess that went on for 6weeks and tracked around underrunning the whole foot. I began with the farrier treating it but after 2 weeks HE insisted the foot was xrayed by the vet .They were both there when the xrays were done and treated it together. Both he and I were unhappy just to let it run on.The heel may be sore due to the poulticing. The xrays pinpointed areas of concern enabled the vet and Farrier to resolve the abscess.
You need the vet and farrier to work together and get xrays done.

I which case I would be asking for a second opinion .I had an equine specialist out from Cotts Veterinary hospital and he felt the best thing was to x ray in case of fractured pedal bone or chipped pedal bone both of which would require different treatment to an abscess.
up to you though

I would get a different vet a friend had a similar thing horse wasn't getting any better, so she got vet back out and it was someone different and it turned out to be laminitis.

agreed it could be all manner of things that are a lot more serious than an abscess and could end up with a broken horse!

How old is the horse? Just before my mare was diagnosed with Cushings, she had a recurrent abscess that kept causing her to be lame. Farrier and vet were involved and as soon as she got used to the Prascend the abscess cleared up.

I'd get the vet out, get the farrier to be there at the same time and get some x-rays done asap then discuss next steps.

My loan horse had a recurrent abcess that x-rays showed tracked horizontally, made itself little pockets of yuk and didn't seem to exit or clear despite poulticing and hot-tubbing religiously after the vet and farrier had done some excavating. On the third time it reappeared he had a partial hoof wall removal/resection which was successful. I had to change iodine dressings into the whole 3xday and keep it scrupulously clean. All in all it took 9 months of mostly box rest for him to come sound (July 2017 to March 2018). He has been completely sound footwise since then, but I am very lucky he put up with box rest and a tiny concrete yard for turnout while this was going on.
