As I was driving home earlier today I came across a Transit type flatbed truck with 2 horses tied to the back of it being 'Towed' along... At first I thought that the guy who was perched on the back of the truck was holding the horses but as I got closer I could see that they were tied to it with their lead ropes...
As I approached from the rear the vehicle was travelling at maybe 10mph, it became apparent that this was because of a learner driver in front of them, as soon as the learner driver turned down a side street the truck driver put his foot down, so much that the two horses ended up cantering behind the truck, slipping all over the place as they went. One of the horses was really struggling to keep up and went down on the road as his front legs went from underneith him, I have no idea how he managed to get back to his feet.
I had seen enough... I overtook them and stopped my van across there path and brought them to a halt, I got out and told them that they were causing harm to the two horses and told them to untie them immediatley... to which I got a mouthful of abuse off them, I rang the Police in front of them and told them what they were doing and requested an immediate response from them.
The truck driver then mounted the kerb, up the grass verge and started to drive off at speed with the horses still attached... the guy at the back untied them as the truck was driving off and jumped off the back of the wagon and held the horses, a small boy aged about 11 jumped out of the truck cab as it was speeding off, fell to the floor shouted at me to 'F' Off and grabbed one of the horses... both horses had head collars on and blue towing rope attached to them... All the time I stayed on the phone to the police relaying what they were doing and gave them the Reg number of the truck... suprise suprise it came back as no insurance and wasn't registered locally!!
The you lad jumped on the piebald pony after threading the rope through its mouth and give it a sharp kick and off it cantered down the road right into on coming cars and a bus, who all had to pull over and up the kerb to get out of its way... the other guy grabbed the black horse and ran off across some playing fields whilst the truck disappeared out of sight...
The police sent a patrol car out immediately but they were well gone by the time they arrived... they took my deatils and looked at the below pick and said they would contact me if they needed further info...
Just had a call from the police to say they have found the two poines and the idiots with them riding up a main road... they have stopped them and are waiting for an animal welfare office to attend as one piebald has a cut on his mouth and is bleeding and the black pony has cut knees from where it has fallen after being dragged up the road!!
Lets hope the welfare officer isnt a 'bit wet' and sends them on their way with 'helpful advice' I have told the police I will help in any prosecution that may come of this!!!
Grrrrrrr what Idiots!!!
