As I was driving home earlier today I came across a Transit type flatbed truck with 2 horses tied to the back of it being 'Towed' along... At first I thought that the guy who was perched on the back of the truck was holding the horses but as I got closer I could see that they were tied to it with their lead ropes...

As I approached from the rear the vehicle was travelling at maybe 10mph, it became apparent that this was because of a learner driver in front of them, as soon as the learner driver turned down a side street the truck driver put his foot down, so much that the two horses ended up cantering behind the truck, slipping all over the place as they went. One of the horses was really struggling to keep up and went down on the road as his front legs went from underneith him, I have no idea how he managed to get back to his feet.

I had seen enough... I overtook them and stopped my van across there path and brought them to a halt, I got out and told them that they were causing harm to the two horses and told them to untie them immediatley... to which I got a mouthful of abuse off them, I rang the Police in front of them and told them what they were doing and requested an immediate response from them.

The truck driver then mounted the kerb, up the grass verge and started to drive off at speed with the horses still attached... the guy at the back untied them as the truck was driving off and jumped off the back of the wagon and held the horses, a small boy aged about 11 jumped out of the truck cab as it was speeding off, fell to the floor shouted at me to 'F' Off and grabbed one of the horses... both horses had head collars on and blue towing rope attached to them... All the time I stayed on the phone to the police relaying what they were doing and gave them the Reg number of the truck... suprise suprise it came back as no insurance and wasn't registered locally!!

The you lad jumped on the piebald pony after threading the rope through its mouth and give it a sharp kick and off it cantered down the road right into on coming cars and a bus, who all had to pull over and up the kerb to get out of its way... the other guy grabbed the black horse and ran off across some playing fields whilst the truck disappeared out of sight...

The police sent a patrol car out immediately but they were well gone by the time they arrived... they took my deatils and looked at the below pick and said they would contact me if they needed further info...

Just had a call from the police to say they have found the two poines and the idiots with them riding up a main road... they have stopped them and are waiting for an animal welfare office to attend as one piebald has a cut on his mouth and is bleeding and the black pony has cut knees from where it has fallen after being dragged up the road!!

Lets hope the welfare officer isnt a 'bit wet' and sends them on their way with 'helpful advice' I have told the police I will help in any prosecution that may come of this!!!

Grrrrrrr what Idiots!!!

That is one of the most shocking things I have ever heard!

Well done you, you deserves a huge congratulations for stepping in!! I'm glad those poor ponies will hopefully now have a better life.

When I started to read this I thought it was a troll! Then I saw the pic.
Words fail me, really and you were very brave to confront them; but then I know I would have

B*stards. That is so awful - made me feel sick; if they can do that in public, what must they be getting away with behind closed (stable) doors. What on earth why they trying to achieve - maybe it was just for some sick sort of ***** fun.

I must admit , I was half expecting this thread to finish with something along the lines of "so I drove past, and am now really upset and what should I have done etc etc" (you get what I mean) - so good on you for doing something about it (just be careful about putting yourself at risk).

Lets hope as well, that the driver will get traced and then get charged with dangerous driving/no insurance etc etc...somehow I doubt it though - these asswipes get away with murder.

Make sure you keep us updated if you hear anything from the welfare people.

I'm not sure that idiots is a strong enough term! You really were very brave to have confronted them at all and thank god for that. I hope they are seized, chances are they don't have passports anyway and I hope the police think to ask for them to provide proof both passports and ownership before letting them disappear with the horses. Poor horses, I hate to say it but they are probably used to that sort of treatment, shame they didn't dump their handler/rider in front of a bus at speed, would be 2 less to worry about!

Ooh, I didnt swear honest! It automatically censored a word beginning with P and ending in Y...

Well done for stopping them, I don't think I would've had the guts! Unfortunately the police will probably do nothing about it which is a shame as they should be banned from keeping ANY animal for life.

You are being naive! This will be the usual way they move the horses from place to place, when they cannot be bothered walking alongside them or have no access to a trailer, these type of horses are quick learners and conditioned to go along with what is asked without arguing, they will know only too well the consequences of not. :(

What a load of completely r*tarted tw*ts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I take my hat of to you for stopping them! I have to say I would have done the same, I would have been FUMING!
Hopefully something comes of this and they have the horses confiscated and they are prosecuted for causing unescisarry suffering to animals and driving without a licence.
Well done you!!

That is absolutely vile! Those poor horses are so lucky that you were there to do something about it! Hopefully those idiots will not be allowed to have them back!

Massive well done to you, you were so brave.

Hope the horses are ok and don't get left with those utter t*ats!!!!!

OMG, thank god there are people like you around, how remarkably restrained you were, I don't condone violence but ........................

No, I'm not naive. Simply wondering out loud..not seen this before - its a new one to me. Given what some people apparently do for *****s and giggles in terms of animal cruelty - it wouldn't surprise me - that's all. Thanks for explaining though :)

Dear god. Just when you think you've seen it all...

Well done you. It was potentially very dangerous what you did in terms of your own personal safety, so took a huge amount of guts. I am so glad that they did not turn on you other than to give it some verbal.

Let's hope those poor horses get the care they deserve now.
