This moron says at the end that he will no longer slow down for horses on the road and some of the comments are just ridiculous. Please stick up for us

Huh! I shan't even lower myself to post anything to those peasant fools whose brains are no larger than an atom....

Seriously, what is wrong with these people? It amazes me how many ABSOLUTE MORONS there are in todays society!

I was hacking out on Saturday and someone was queueing (sp) to pass us, beeping his horn - he went past and shouted 'you're all f#*/ing @rseh#les' - I thought - 'hmm yes, I can see that - you look like a pillar of the community...we should be ashamed of ourselves...'

Grrr....drives me mad

what an idiot he is. Ive got to agree with some of the points raised. Its the minority of riders that causes drivers to be ignorant to the rest of the riders.

Oh definitely - it infuriates me when I pass riders who don't thank drivers and who don't seem to even notice them! It's certainly no excuse for leaning out of passing cars hurling abuse and beeping horns at horse riders and endangering peoples lives though!

I totally agree with you. As a horse rider (obviously) I always feel like I want to get out of the car and challenge them as to why they cant be bothered to even make the slightlest movement to say thank you. A nod of a head and a smile takes no time at all, even if your horse is playing up!

I know what you mean - some people wander along, chatting away - I always make a point of making eye contact with the drivers so that they know I have seen them and am concentrating. I say thank you to even drivers who dont slow down, in the hope that next time they will consider the rider more. It's so annoying when riders dont even look up and acknowledge drivers - then they moan that no-one slows down! I think there are some idiots on both sides really, it just annoys me that I get hassle from drivers when I am always so considerate!

A pet gripe of mine, too!
I ride youngsters so can't always do much thanking

, but I try to do something at least, and I'm lucky that most the drivers I meet are OK, some even plain wonderful.
So when an ignorant rider swans along as if they own the road completely ignoring me when I've gone out of my way to pass them carefully, it does annoy me...

I actually agree with this bloke.

I pass so many riders around here that are just sooo ignorant it makes my blood boil.

I make a very big thing of putting my hand up high and make it very obvious that I am thanking the driver. I also give them eye contact and a big smile whilst saying "Thank you"!

I hate to say it but horse riders do look like snotty a-holes a lot of the time. I have battled with so many non horsey people about this subject but now I have had to give in a agree.

We moan about how the roads are becoming more dangerous. Most people do not have horse sense. They do not understand why you should slow down or give space to a horse. (Why should they, they don't ride)?

If I were none horsey I would feel much the same.

Most drivers seem to really appreciate my big thank yous. They generally smile and say "Pleasure".

Yes, there are the awful drivers out there who are hell bent on bullying us off of the road.

I do think a lot of drivers are becoming more ignorant because us riders are becoming more ignorant. (That is how I am seeing it around these parts anyway)!

I don't think ranting at drivers is the answer. Being more pro-active on the road is a better option. IMHO.

I think it's about building a relationship with the drivers...I used to hack out on a main road (no alternatives) through a village, was always careful to thank drivers who slowed down, tried to help them past, got out of the way of police cars and ambulances, bedecked myself and horse in high viz gear.
As a result, the drivers were nearly all lovely, waving, smiling, and most importantly slowing down. My horse lived in a field next to the road and some would even wave when I was poo picking....
So smile and wave, ladies and gents!

well said bonza bean! have to say I agree with you. There is no way the horse riding community will ever get through to motorists by being abusive, that approach will never work.

Ditto

it's a tough one, I always make a real effort to say thank you to drivers, and when I'm having a problem and they stop I feel like hugging them! I admit that some riders can be rude, and it makes me very irritated! I have had numerous fights with my sister over her lack of road sense and intention to hack out on a busy road with an ipod in! I have a young horse, and nearly every time I go out I encounter at least one very rude and thoughtless driver, I'm so appreciative of some consideration!

Ah, but have you taken in WHY he says he won't slow down for horses in the future? I'm afraid that he is absolutely right. The riders he is talking about are the ones who should be ashamed of themselves and are, obviously, getting all riders a bad name. Common courtesy (which is not very common, it would appear) costs nothing and an acknowledgement when vehicles slow down for you is really very easy.

me and my pony nearly got hit last night on country lane by teen lads going about 70 thankfully his windows were down so he heard all my foul language to which he told me to "calm down love", my pony at which point poo'd herself all down her back legs and started to shake (she is, or was 100% in traffic, i hope to god she still will be)

my reply to this ignorant twat :

Whilst i agree very rude not to say thanks - can i just point out FOR YOUR SAFETY - a horse can spook and go out of control at as little as a crisp packet in the wind, so you imagine your flying towards a horse which spooks infront of your car.

a 1 tonne horse through your windscreen will KILL YOU, and it, and the rider.

dont be such an inconsiderate pratt. its not going to slow down but it just might if you dont.

as for horse poo - get a grip - horses where on the road - and earth before you !!

I always try to catch the driver's eye - if they are coming up behind I will turn my head - 9 times out of 10 they slow down and I say thank you and put my hand up or nod. Usually smile back, most don't though!

the biggest reason for me considering moving yards (although I love my current yard) is the 500 acres of off road hacking available.

Had an minor incident with a huge rubbish truck a few weeks ago, he came flying around a blind bend, my ned just planted himself and started backing up - I had no choice but to turn him around and into a layby as calmly as I could - the truck went past with the driving shouting something that sounded derogatory. In his world I was an inconvenience slowing down his journey in probably a shitty day he was having and took his bad mood out on me. Ah well, maybe I should move..........

That being said, I regularly ride a 2 mile stretch of horrible A road to ride out with a friend - every Saturday morning abour 10ish.

It is a road that has many accidents from people driving too fast for some nasty bends, nothing to do with horses or cyclists.

Now I ride this road one handed, whip in the other - and I wave at EVERYONE and thank them - in fact I'm chattering away like an idiot saying thank you, people must think I'm crazy. Now lots of drivers acknowledge you, but some are so ignorant that I get mad that they won't even look at you.

Rudeness cuts both ways and I as a rider always acknowledge drivers, and as a car driver, always smile and wave back at riders.

Maybe they ar more used to horses round here, there are loads of stables, but its a rare occassion when I have a bad driver. The buses are fab, motorbikes really good (except they are soooo noisy!) and Asti just ignores everything - caravans, trailers, horseboxes... We get the lot.

Oh and if I start to get a queue of traffic as its difficult to overtake on some of it - I always pull off the road where I can and stand to let them past.

See, I'm an angel me
grin.gif

all the anti horse comments are all pure ignorance - people always say why dont you get off the road and ride on a bridle path, well i know a lot of people are in a similar situation but i have one bridle path that takes 20mins by road to get to and its the only one in my area and is only about 300yards long so pretty pointless really!!

But even if a rider is snotty and ignores a driver for slowing down - that driver then deciding "sod it, Im going to drive fast past all horses from now on" is completely ridiculous! And extremely dangerous. I dislike the fact that some of these drivers seem to think they're doing us some kind of favour slowing down - of course I am thankful if someone slows down for me but at the same time they SHOULD slow down anyway for the safety of the horse & rider and also themselves! I always slow down and give a wide berth round cyclists yet I certainly dont expect them to wave and say thanks to me.

What Im saying is, I think all drivers who make the effort should be thanked by the rider simply to keep them on good terms. But some drivers attitude about riding on the road is just dreadful. The fact that they feel we have no right to be there is just a joke. Horses were there a long time before their cars were!

Personally Ive found most drivers are nice. In the summer especially I find a lot of cars slowing right down so they can point out the horses to their children who have their faces glued to the windows! I find motorcyclists the nicest bunch, probably because they understand us because they're as vulnerable as we are. It's the boy racers who are the worst, I remember one came so close his car tapped the end of my whip, now that just isnt funny.

I said my bit under the name 'H'. or rather part of my opinions!

I find that the boy racers round here are generally really good, they often turn music right off and some even turn their engines off. I've never had a problem with a young driver, but frequently (daily) encounter very inconsiderate driving from middle aged and older people

If I remember correctly, from my BHS Ride and Road Safety at PC, we were told that ANY driver who makes ANY effeort for you should be thanked, on the basis that they would feel their actions had been appreciated and therefore they would continue to slow down for horses.

I'm another who sometimes feels like getting out of my car when I pass horses and the riders can't even acknowledge that you've slowed down for them.

This is something I'm very 'up' on atm. With havig to use roads to reach off road hacking, with two small children i am only two aware of thanking drivers.

We have a lovely young girl who rides ponio for us (she's a good rider and it does him the power of good). I always walk along side her and have taught her this... "You pony may be bomb proof. If you don't thank someone they might not slow down for the next horse. That might not affect you, but one day they wil speed past you pony too, and it only takes ONE idiot driver to make a pony spook and be scared of hacking out again".

We always use arm sinals for "slow down" and being in an area where alot of bike racing takes place we always say a cheery hello to bike riders. I will give a big smiley grin and a huge "thankyou" to anyone who slows down, and for those who don't slow down, I teach the kids to ignore them, but when on my own I do tend to give them a big thumbs up and a cheeky grin. Hopefully it makes them think.

Most importantly we stop and chat to people out walking, let them stroke the pony, and usually have a nice "hows the weather" chat. Nothing like a smiley face, a cute pony and alot of courtesy to get the message across.

There are bad RIDERS and bad DRIVERS. I find the MAJORITY of both are considerate, but I do not tar every rider and driver with the same brush because of one bad one.
