Late reply, but I don't believe you've let him down. Letting him down would have been leaving him with the loaner, who, had she continued down the path with the farrier, could have permanently crippled him. Instead, you did right by him and got him out of a bad situation and are doing everything in your power to set him to rights again. I'd say that's one lucky horse!
