Absolutely devastated

Vet came out on Wednesday to my beautiful mare, and it seems we are looking at a fractured pelvis or dorsal joint (connects the pelvis to the spine).

We are taking her to the clinic for xrays and scans next Tuesday so will know the definately prognosis after that, but it really doesn't look good.

My first event season with her looks to have gone down the pan, and I'll either need to find something to loan for the season or (if the worst) buy. It doesn't feel likely that I will do my first BE this year now.

It is just so awful, I think I'm in shock! Not quite as teary today, but the reality of having to find another horse just seems impossible.

She had a fall in the field a few weeks ago when it was really windy, and she hasn't been quite right ever since. That was her last day of antibiotics from her viral infection and was she was feeling exhuberant. Coupled with the wind she just went loop-de-loop in the field, my dressage coach rescued her for me and although she was lame although we couldn't work out which leg! She was covered in scratches and bruises, seemed to recover from the general lameness within one day but then hasn't been right since.

Jane said that there is a possibility it has been a long term problem, recently exaserbated by the fall; alternatively it could have been entirely caused by the fall.

My poor Annie, I'm so depressed!

Really really hope she is ok. Sending huge positive healing vibes. Horses are just so frustrating you just keep having to tell yourself to relish the good times when they come.

You poor thing. I really feel for you, particularly as you were just about to start eventing.

If it's any consolation my horse did something similar many years ago: he galloped to the gate, slipped on the concrete apron, went over and fractured his pelvis. He came right after lots of rest and still managed to compete very successfully; he's still going strong now at the age of 22, a bit arthritic admittedly, but sound enough to hunt.

My old pony broke her pelvis, alought they never xrayed as they said the journey to the vets would kill her, and portable Xray things were not strong enough to get throught the whole pelvis.
 
Really sorry to hear that. You never know though, you hear lots of stories (some above) of horses who come back from it. Its not easy in the meantime though, have a hug and I hope things aren't as bad as they currently seem.
