hi
we had a person from on here bring horses to yard for livery was only meant to be one horse we then had an email asking if another horse could come just for 3 weeks i said yes but it could not stay longer at the end of 3 weeks i was asked could it stay another few weeks i said could but only 5 weeks more then this horse ended up staying longer no permission given!!
these horses were very destructive and chewed one of the fences to peices and it had to be replaced we told her she would have to pay for this as she made no attempt to stop this happening and never mentioned it to us..we did put up electric fencing in the end but she agreed bill would be paid and she was going to get the owner of other horse to pay half...she knew she could only stay till winter so she found another yard and moved the horses paying us half the bill for fence still owing the other half and still owing 3 weeks livery for the horse that wasn't even meant to be there!!! she paid half and said it was down to the other owner to pay rest (the other owner was nothing to do with original agreement and i had nothing to do with her as she wasn't around) i think it is down to the girl i dealt with to pay this bill as that's who i had agreement with she is not ansering phone calls etc i know roughly where the horses are now should i go and make a fuss??
also these horses broke several other things of which i said nothing even though she never apologised or said about it
i know horses do damage things and will chew fences but this was extreme and she wasn't paying enough to cover damages like this...
anyway what would u do?
sorry it's soo long but really cross and fed up

Go to her new yard and have a quiet word with the YO. You may have lost your money but no need to make it easy, and she might well do it to the next person.

I can understand that you would be a bit miffed - I'm guessing you aren't a proper livery yard?

When I charge my liveries their rent money, it covers keeping and me paying for my fences to be up to scratch and repaired......however this is one of the reasons that I have never accepted horses, on any of my yards, who have vices such as these.

I can't advise you on what to do - that has to be your call. If it was me, I'd let it ride but as I say, livery rent money covers this sort of thing at my yards.

This sort of thing should be included in the price of the livery, she could say that you didn't provide adequate fencing etc. TBH any horse will eat a wood fence, which is why all our wooden fencing has electric on it.

I would be anoyed about the livery, perhaps call the other owner and try and get the money out of her, but the wear and tear is your problem I'm afraid.

Welcome to the joys of a livery yard - you did have proper insurance and are paying business rates aren't you?

the other livery's do pay enough as they are full livery or proper diy but she was only short term to basically get her to this area as moved from up north we agreed she could just be on grass livery so we just charged 20 a week but this was including use of full size indoor school x country fences etc so wasn't really enough to cover damages like were caused .. i don't mind the odd thing like the other stuff was damaged i wouldn't charge her for but the fence was really bad and her 20 a week wasn't going to cover that!!!
whats annoyed me most ws she agreed to pay it then didn't without discussing it with us first!!
though tia i won't be taking horses like these in again NO destructive horses lol

Yes I can understand you feeling a bit taken for granted then. Trouble is, it's always unknown and often these short-term liveries end up costing you money rather than giving you a little bit of pocket money.

I have a horse here who ripped out a standpipe which was buried 8ft into the ground. His owner pays 190 per month and the cost to dig down and disconnect, remove and resituate the standpipe cost 1,000. So I know that this horse isn't going to be making me any profit for months! The sad life of a livery yard owner I'm afraid - just when you start going forward, you're thrown back into the red again LOL!!

Agree with you here, but people don't always tell the truth! Our yard owner tells people before they come to the yard that they don't accept horses with vices but there is one terrible windsucker/crib biter which is now affecting the other horses - even in the field. Am pretty sure the owners wouldn't have 'declared' it as a windsucker before they arrived!

Don't know what's best in your situation.......although it may be best just to cut losses and chalk it up to experience. A royal pain in the a*se but there will always be unscrupulous people taking advantage of kind natures

I would suggest that you should provide each of your liveries with a contract which states exactly the terms and conditions by which they keep a horse at your yard.

The contact should be signed and dated by the owner of the horse (or the poerson responsible for paying the bill) before their horses arrive at your yard.

As stated above you need to esnure that you have third party insurance and public liability and that each of your liveries do as well.
