Absolutely gutted - WWYD?

A lot of stolen tack is recovered but it is impossible to identify the owner as it is not marked.
Please make it as easy as possible to identify all your items of tack by having it 'Tack Marked', Applying 'Smartwater' and micro-chipping it. That way if it is recovered the owner can be identified.

Sadly hindsight is a wonderful thing. Obviously my other saddle will now be security marked and if my dressage saddle is returned I'll do the same with it too.

Really sorry to hear of your tack being stolen GG2B, I hope that it is returned safe and sound. As others have said, seems to be rife at the moment, has even happened at our yard, first time ever as far as I can see. It does make you think, we seem to be much more aware of security and who has access to what on our yard since that day.

We had a very expensive Nueu Schule bit taken from our tack room - we were 100% certain we knew who took it, we even 'queried' if they had picked it up with their stuff 'by mistake/accident' Another livery told us that she changed her bridle bit in the boot of her car and the bit looked a lot like ours but there was no proof. Funnily enough she moved to another yard the next week - odd that. Never got it back - no one else had a reason to borrow it

I'm in London/Surrey and saw your post on the facebook page over the weekend. Just wanted to say how sorry I am and I really hope your stuff gets returned soon; I haven't read all the replies but it appears that you may know who has taken it. You are doing all the right things, good luck x

Sorry to hear this, you must feel awful knowing it is probably someone you know who did this. I really hope you get it back.

Please be aware that once a saddle is stolen, very often the thief will return a few months later assuming another saddle has been bought.

You could also make it "known" that your tack has been treated with Smartwater and is eminently traceable. Doesn't matter that it isn't true. If people think it is too hot to handle, it may miraculously reappear.

I would do this too. We had a saddle go missing recently and putting a note up saying that it was traceable and that the police had been notified made it miraculously reappear!

I would be asking the police to hold a meeting letting all the liveries know they are following up leads to recover your tack. Might flush the thieving toe rag out! Also seriously invest in a lockable saddle rack or tack box .

feel absolutely awful for you, I can't imagine how heartbroken you are.

is it possible for you to contact a local paper and put a note/article about your missing tack and urging others to be careful as there is a tack thief/borrower around and what they can do to protect themselves. the thought of public shame if they were caught with your saddle might urge someone to return it as they 'accidentally took it home'.

I would also invest in a tack locker, even if its just for the peace of mind against this happening again. It's even worse when you know its most likely to be someone from the yard who's taken it, definitely keep an eye out for anyone who ups and moves suddenly.

I am so glad I have an individual tack room, just because it means I know that the only people with a key are me and mum. I will definitely see about getting my tack marked though, I was thinking of getting a brass plate with my name/my horses name on it for my jump saddle but if I can get both marked so it's traceable then it's even better!

So sorry to hear about this and how awful it was an inside job. Could th YO interview everyone, try and establish roughly what time it was taken and who was about? Is there anyone on the yard who has a grudge or anyone who you are close with who has heard anything?? best of luck finding your bits xxx

The trouble is we have a separate tack room for just us field liveries, many of whom don't ride much until the weekend. One person has said they are certain it was there earlier on in the week but that's as close as we've got to pinpointing when it might have been taken.

I'm very much a keep myself to myself kind of person. I ride out with the same group of people or on my own and when I'm not hacking I'm schooling. In the YO's words I'm lovely to everyone so no grudges that myself or anyone else is aware of. I'd really hoped everything would have been returned by now :(

I agree with the poster earlier - let it be known your nice saddle was marked with Smartwater and you're surprised it hasn't just been put back.

As luck would have it it has actually been marked with Smartwater, only found out when I asked the old owner if she happened to know the serial number. Have made this known to everyone but still no sign of it yet :(

Absolutely awful and I really feel for you. I'm afraid if I had suspicions then I would be getting the police down to speak to that person, especially if the YO has the same suspicions! Absolutely hate thieving, I'm afraid to me it sounds personal that you have been targeted through jealousy. I would definitely make it clear that it was marked with clear water or something and hoe it gets smuggled back into you, I'd then take it home. I've only ever left my tack at one yard which was fairly secure but got hacked off when On two occasions I found someone had dumped three spare saddles ontop of mine and the saddle cover got ripped and a scratch on the seat of my saddle. Took everything home sharpish after that.
