Had mare vetted today, lady had put her deposit down and was to collect her Sunday if all went well.

Vet found sarcoid near the girth area :( small bit bigger than a pea, always been there, never changed in the year and a bit I have had her. Didn't really think anything of it, just thought it was a wart, it's covered in hair, doesn't affect her whatsoever. Silly really, should have had it checked out. :(

Lady who was buying has decided not to have her due to it (understandably).
I really don't know what to do now, I obviously have to state that she has it. What do I write though, surely it will put people off instantly?

I have no idea about how they affect value of the horse, whether or not to have it treated, just what to do in general. Am going to speak to my vet about it tomorrow. Just totally deflated, bleurgh. :(

I'll take anything, advice, sympathy whatever you want!
New York style chicken and chips for all.

Thanks patchandloopy, I need lots of hugs.
It's not a nice thing anyway, selling.
The buyer was perfect for her too, she immediately loved her and she sounded so sad on the phone to me when she told me :(

Bleurgh, just going to wallow in self pity and eat junk.

Oh Bugger!

I would get the sarcoid treated, my own horse had one on her inner thigh, it was treated with Liverpool Cream and has never returned, neither has she developed any others, it may be worth speaking with your vet.

Sorry, does not help your current situation but if it is any consolation, if the horse was everything I wanted, I would probably still buy it, sarcoids are not the end of the world for me, others would run a mile.

Don't get too down. You now know your horse will pass a vetting apart from this small sarcoid near her girth. So get the sarcoid treated and then put her back on the market. You can either ask your vet it they can order you some bloodroot ointment (a bottle costs about £100 and you can put it on yourself) That will treat most sarcoids in 4-6 weeks. Or you could try Liverpool cream but this is much more expensive as it involves 5 vet callouts as only a vet can administer it. It is very effective though.

So although it is disappointing it isn't the worst thing that could have happened. At least your horse has got something that is relatively easily treatable.

Ahh no I'm sorry to hear that :( Was the vet certain it was a sarcoid though? My old boy had something similar, was vetted and told it was a sarcoid, my own vet thought it wasn't, so we had it biopsied and it turned out to just be some sort of non malignent lump! It was the same size as your girl's, stood out a bit and was whitish coloured.

Same scenario as you, my friend had a horse sold subject to the vet, vet found a pea sized apparent sarcoid which put purchaser off. She had another buyer who wanted the horse and they too wanted it vetting. Next vet came, found the "sarcoid", said "ugh, what's that" and pulled it off!

Horse passed. Purchasers bought and still have :)

When I was buying my mare she had one and the vet thought it was a sarcoid. I bought her anyway cos I loved her and to me that was not a major issue.

Bad luck!

Get your vet out to look at the lump. Even if it is a sarcoid some may drop off with manipulation or banding which is not a big deal, otherwise there are other options like Liverpool cream which work really well. I have to say that if it was anywhere else it wouldn't put me off (I bought a horse with what the vet thought was a sarcoid, it disappeared on its own within a year) but near the girth is a possible problem area and I would want a firm diagnosis and treatment.

If it was anywhere else I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem either!
Saying that, she has worn tack quite happily for the last year without any problems.

I know that removing sarcoids can activate the 'virus' and cause them to spread. I think it's a 40%-60% chance that it will not reoccur. I'm just in two minds what to do about it.
I also have no idea how much to drop the purchase price, because obvioulsy I will have to.

I'm sitting tight untill next week, when my vet can come out to see her.

I have heard that Thuja is very good at getting rid of sarcoids. I am not sure if it is a cream or tincture though. someone on here will know more.

My husband's ISH was vetted and they found a few "potential sarcoids" behind the girth area and under his belly. We still bought him. Three years later nothing has ever happened. Our vet said to make up a paste out of tea tree oil and lemongrass, and cover the lumps with it - most of them disappeared...

Horse at my yard - 10 year old or so, 16hh 1/2 Connie, 1/4 Arab is on sale at £3000. He has about 4 sarcoids though (face, neck, chest) and one of the instructors said she'd be doing well at £1500, even though he loves to jump/XC and could compete in big classes tomorrow pretty much. It probably depends on the original asking price for your horse and the seriousness of the sarcoids though, so I'm not sure if James' pricing would be representative of another horse's.
