absolutely gutted..

One of mine has also done a tendon in his hind leg which Im gutted about. Vet came out last week and suggested 2 weeks of bute and putting on some anti-inflammatory gel. She said would be better if he was box rested but this horse would kill himself if he had to be (he's a very athletic horse who lives out 24/7). She said he wasnt lame enough that he HAD to be box rested so ok for him to remain in the field, but we agreed I'd make some small paddocks with electric fencing to minimise the space for him to trot/canter about. She said they could do a scan if need be but to be honest it wouldnt help much, other than showing how much damage was done - basically its the same treatment whatever the result is? So horse has been turned away completely and will be for next 2 / 3 months, I'm really hoping he'll come right in this time. I wasnt offered any other therapy as mentioned here (and he is insured)... should I ask vet about these other options??

First of all - much sympathy from me! Sending healing vibes...

My then-21-year old did the SDFT in his near fore in late 2009 and took 18 months to come sound. We tried everything - stem cells, PrP, etc. In the end I just turned him out into a small area and eventually he came right. In fact, he eventually came off the drugs too (was on half a danilon every other day). But the sad news is that this weekend he's started to go lame on it again.. :(

But anyway, agree with advice re claiming. Even if you don't claim this time, it'll be an exclusion. If you're with PetPlan then it'll be fine. The vets may also offer physiotherapy which would also be covered.

I was interested to hear that you weren't offered Stem Cell therapy due to age and extent of injury. My boy was 21 and it was a very big lesion and we still tried it. But the cells they harvested from him wouldn't grow in the lab (which was blamed on his age so maybe they just don't offer it to older horses because of that now).

I'm insured with South Essex Insurance Brokers and they coughed up the whole whack for my mare's PRP treatment, even down to the last roll of cotton wool for her bandaging. yes, that leg is excluded now, but it would have cost me well over £3K had I not claimed so I would say its deffo worth claiming.

mm - we were offered three treatment options.
prp, stem cells and a bone marrow treatment.
I would ask your vet.

jerrys been booked in for Tuesday at 1000 and I'm waiting on my insurance company getting back to me (silly me cant find the paperwork).
if they won't pay out then we'll pay for it ourselves. the vets pretty optimistic he'll come sound :)
on the downside - our other horse has lami :(

It was due to the cost. I forgot that they could exclude that leg anyways due to it being an existing injury if we try to claim in the future so we're going to claim for it.
