Last night was probably the worst night ever for us, our lovely mare Sadie foaled last night & after a very traumatic delivery gave birth to a huge beautiful colt, he wasn't breathing at birth but we resuscitated him & kept him alive for 15 minutes but then he sadly passed away. This is extremely distressing & needless to say we are devestated, he was a smashing big lad & looked perfect in everyway, in 8 years of breeding this has never happened and I know we have been very lucky but it's so awful and I so feel for my mare it makes me want to give up.
We have one foal already who will now have no playmate as we only put 2 of our mares in foal for this year, looking for a mare with a foal at foot to join our herd now.

Sorry pressed return before finishing. Very very sorry for your loss. So awful and traumatic for all. But if your mare can help another foal who has been orphaned then it won't have been all for nothing :(
National Foaling Bank may be able to help too x

I am so sorry to read your post very sad for you. It is awful to see your mare give birth to a lovely foal and to lose it. I hope your poor mare does not grieve too long and perhaps as suggested she might foster another foal.

Two years ago we lost a Cleveland colt in almost identical circumstances - apparently perfect and healthy, he would not stand or suckle he died that day. It is a truly horrible experience.

Thank you everyone, we did consider getting an orphan foal for her as she has loads of milk, she is a wonderful mum and this foal was her seventh so she is experienced. She sustained a nasty tear to her vaginal wall and there was some concern over night regarding internal bleeding so she wouldn't be fit to travel and I wouldn't want her away from home as she would be so stressed leaving here (she's never been away from home in 12 years) and leaving her stable mate and fellow mum. I didn't think an orphaned foal travelled, it was always the mare that went to the foal, please correct me if I'm wrong.

What an awful experience i really feel for you. Orphan foals can travel very easily (in a car if necessary). Hope you and your mare feel up to giving an orphan a chance but appreciate you have had a horrible time.

So sorry for your loss, this is the worst side of breeding :-( Fingers crossed that your mare recovers quickly.

I agree with the others, if your mare could offer an orphan foal a better start in life, then two horrendous circumstances could have a happier ending!

What a night mare, the situation every breeder dreads. My mare has eluded me twice in foaling, luckily all was ok but i dread to think what might have happened had she got into difficulty. So sorry for your loss. A foster foal might lessen the loss for the mare.

Spoken with Johanna Varden at the National Foaling Bank last night and made all the preparations to receive a foal today but unfortunately after milking my mare last night she then started showing signs of colic through the night, she seems ok this morning but now she isn't happy about me trying to get any milk off her.
So we have decided not to stress her out with continuing with a foster foal, she seems ok in herself and is eating so after a vet check tomorrow, she will return out with the rest of the herd.
My mares well being has to be my priority.
The foal who was due to come had a set back anyway so owners weren't happy to travel him which makes it a little easier in our decision, at least we weren't letting him down.

:( I am so sorry for such a sad loss of your foal, and I hope your mare heals quickly, and you will breed again Its such a waste when you lose a baby, good luck with what ever you decide do.

We went through almost exactly the same thing two years ago. It was awful and we also felt like giving up. Hang in there. It does get less painful eventually.

So sorry for your loss .. a few weeks back my maiden mare aborted our first ever filly two days after her due date - fully formed foal but severely disfigured mouth so she wouldnt have survived even had she been alive .. awful awful times and really feel for you xx

Absolutely, the mare should always be the priority over anything. I hope she is feeling better today.

I am so sorry OP - what a beautiful colt he was too. Poor him, poor you and poor mare. All I can say is hugs to you and time is a great healer. So very sad.

RIP beautiful young man xxx

Thank you everyone for your kind encouraging comments, my mare has now had the all clear off our vet and is now back out with her best pal of 11 years so she seems a bit happier now. Will never forget her beautiful colt foal; Wylderswoode Rolls Royce'
RIP little man xxxxx
