Absolutely Livid, and advice wanted!

Lovely hack with the Pony-O today, that is, until two absolute **redacted for sake of my forum account** on 50cc modified tincans/motorbikes, came haring around the corner, spotted us and proceeded to speed up past us as fast as they could, making a LOT of noise (think those idiots who fit those god-awful stupidloud rattly exhausts) with the obvious intention of scaring Inky.
She was so good bless her, she got upset and started jogging after the first but after the second, louder one she bolted with me, galloping down the hill, but I was able to pull her up after about 200yrds. If that had been someone on a more highly strung/nervy horse, that could have ended so so so much worse, they could have reared, been thrown urgh makes me sick to think!

Anyway, after some choice words and shaky legs, we finished our hack, but I've resolved to get a chest mounted camera for any future incidents, as if I'd have had some form of ID this time I would have gone to the police as the sheer intentional nature of this was just arrgh getting angry again! Inky got lots of reassurance and strokes from me, and lots of cuddles when we got home, poor thing was so scared!

Anyway, any recommendations for cameras/models and chest mounts from you guys? I'm a bit poor (aren't we all here lol) so I'd probably have to go second hand, but looking for something that'll do at least 1h 30mins with sound, with enough definition to make out a license plate.
 
Good Lord !! We're hearing of more and more incidents like this. I actually wont hack on the roads any more. Quite limiting, but safer. Its a sorry state of affairs when we're all running around the place with cameras, filming each other, but I know its necessary these days as the blatant lack of respect is so apparent. I drive around and sometimes recall roads I used to hack along, and now wouldn't do it for all the tea in China. Whats happened ????? Anyway, Im very glad you were unscathed, and just hope it doesnt happen again to you
 
I don't blame you for not riding the roads! I'm lucky to have a few short routes which don't require anything more than a single road to cross or a short ride along the road, but any longer rides to require roadwork!

It boils my beans especially, as I was a motorcyclist for 5 years, and if I spotted anyone on a horse it was brakes, engine off, wait till they've passed and a good distance away before slowly moving off again, or if I was the one passing, it was very slow and as wide as possible, or waiting for the rider to pull into a gate entrance or something and passingly wide and slow again. IT ISN'T ROCKET SCIENCE ARGH!
 
I don't have much advice on the technological front but I know how you feel. There are a bunch of idiots near where I ride who do this up and down a BRIDLEWAY! I have considered calling the police on them multiple times as it's a wonder no one's been seriously hurt. But I'm worried with so many horses kept nearby that they might come back and maliciously target the animals as I'm sure they'd guess someone called the police on them.

I think you should report the incident to the police though - even now. Because it's serious and dangerous and at least they can be on the lookout for people doing similar things in the area and will take it seriously if they get more reports. I think that next time I will do the same.
 
Report it to the police anyway. Mention it to as many people as possible. It may well get through to them or their families. At the very least it helps to highlight the problem.
 
I have to say I am so shocked when I read things like this, maybe we are lucky but most drivers round our way are polite and courteous and are very careful around us when we are out hacking. You obviously get the odd one going a tad too fast but nothing malicious like this!! Maybe I am just lucky. We do get a lot of cyclists which can be a bit stressful at times as some of them get so close and obviously they are silent but other than that no issues really *touch wood* I have to say I would also be furious if anything like this happened with me. Sorry you had such a bad experience!!
 
Where i used to live in Hampshire, many years ago, LOADS and loads of horse riders staged a protest and rode slowly a few miles along a main road (there must have been hundreds of them) I think to raise awareness of horses on the roads. Brilliant idea i think, even though I am also a driver. It even got in the newspaper, though i dont know if it really had any long term effect on drivers attitudes in the area

Thanks for support all, I will report to police via 101, I completely forgot about 101 lol. Rang just now but 40min wait, so will ring again later when it calms down a bit x
 
Hope you are feeling calmer now. One of the important things in a camera is battery life - a lot of the cheaper ones have a short battery life. I went for a go-pro because I was doing 2+ hour hacks regularly but it depends on what you do.

Looking for something with approx 2 hours, I'm usually out for 1hr 30mins most as my shoulders starts to seize after that :P
 
I use a Muvi helmet cam from Veho. I picked it up for about £40 i think? A lot of cyclists use it for the same reasons as us and a friend had recommended it. I've had good results, i also clip it to the fence of the arena for rough and ready schooling videos :)
 
Glad you're both OK.

They're not cheap, but I really rate the GoPro - and if you can find a 2 or 3 they're a lot cheaper than the 4 (latest model) and will do what you want. You also have the option of a chest or helmet mount so can choose what you're most comfortable with.

As an aside, I also wear mine when I'm doing stuff on the ground with the horse - it's a fab tool for replaying a training session and making notes after the event when you can pause and rewind... Geek? Me? :D
 
Whenever me and my hacking buddy go onto roads now we use the hat cam..

It was only last week a lovely driver slowed down which I thanked them for... The driver behind however obviously had the hump at being slowed down all the 2 seconds and when he pulled along side us revved his engine spun his wheels and skidded off at break neck speed! Lucky for us the horses could care a jot.... Got it all on camera though.
 
I reported the incident to 101, but not much they could do as I didn't have a reg number, so I've got an incident ref so it's logged.

I can't really afford a gopro, so I might just get a clip on camera I can attach to my guilet, something like the hackcam maybe?
 
Reminds me of when a local scum tried to spook my horse with his bike ,so we climbed onto a high verge and he soon gave up . Well thats what he thought I would think. Actually he just drove around the block and hoped he could catch my horse unawares . What he hadnt planned on was the bloomin great stick I broke off a tree. I got him hard, straight across his face . He fell off !

They have changed their stock a lot since I was selling and I am not that familiar with the current crop so you need to go through them and make your own mind up.
If you choose the cheapest option regarding postage, it quite often doesn't add to the costs enough to qualify for customs charges but the cheapest postage IS very slow.
Even if you choose delivery within a few days (more expensive) AND you get customs charges it's still cheaper than buying the same cameras over here.

I see OP that you're at Exeter, which isn't a huge distance away from me!!!

Where did the incident occur? PM me if you like..........

There is a BHS site (sorry can't remember the name or link for it) - and you can enter the details of the incident there, they are keeping a record/mapping of horse-related incidents which occur throughout the country, I've reported a dog "incident" on there before now and the BHS are using the info that people give for road safety/police liaison etc etc.

Can anyone provide the link?? I think its called "horse-related incidents" or something like that, but the BHS website proper should take you into it.

Next, you need to report this incident to everyone and anyone that will listen. I'd make your local PCSO and local councillors aware - obviously bearing in mind that councillors etc could change radically on Thursday!!!

Consider also local papers, parish publications etc etc: Radio Devon??? just a thought - sometimes a topic comes up on their phone-ins and you could ring in with your experience.

Poor you, this sounds terrifying. It is awful when you know that someone is "out there" and they're deliberately trying to frighten your horse. That's dead scary, and truly horrible. Hope you and your horse get over this OK.

I've let the police know, and I'm about to post some warnings on various FB groups, no denying the power of FB now a days! I just worry it's going to happen to someone else who isn't on such a chill horse, and those sods will get away scot free >:T

Oh, I feel your pain... my friend was riding Ben back from the show for me so I could take the car, similar thing happened today... only her quick thinking and experience stopped him from going over backwards when he reared. Hope you are both ok - its really an awful thing to happen, and it struck me as damned cruel, there are all these sodding 'think biker' adverts but some of them don't give a damn about us!

Can't help on the camera front, it was such a long time since I got mine, but its damned well going on for hacks as this biker is quite notorious in his behavior towards horses although no one is sure who he is.
 
Argh people like that in possession of little brain spoil things for everyone (I've had cars and quads do it to me before... unfortunately for the quad bike driver as I drew near it turned out I knew him.... never seen someone go as red faced!)

Would just like to take the opportunity to thank the lovely, considerate off road motorbike riders I met on a field today. It has a nice hill that I expect they normally have great fun jumping off at speed and as the first one came down the dip he clocked me, slowed down, gave me a wide berth and signalled for his friend to do the same. So yeah there are some nice, sane people left out there as well as the idiots!
 
I use a go pro camera, cost me about 80 quid but is totally worth it as it comes with whole host of accessories so I can mount it to my chest, hat just about anywhere! Its also water proof and takes a bashing pretty well too.
