Abuse when out hacking

I had a horse out in harness for the first time yesterday, and there were several times when drivers (who could see that he was being led as well as driven) gave us much more space, time and care than usual, including one tanker driver who reversed 200yds rather than try to pass us in a 'too small' passing place on a single track road. It was lovely to have so much support from fellow road-users.

That woman with the horses waking her kids up though!! 😂😂😂 I would have been screaming laughing... no way could I have stayed polite for that! She'd have probably run her car properly into my horse though.

It's a good job she doesn't live round here. We get a daily 5am wake up call from The Lonely/Hungry/Angry Bull. When you wake up to let the dogs out he stares at us over the garden fence and yells some more. Would love to see the farmer's reaction if I complained.

I literally can't believe how angry she was about horse shoes. Omg.

There are a number of people running dog walking business where I ride and most of them have at least 6 dogs - one had 12 and even if they try to control them most don't have leads and any attempts are very half hearted.

I used to be a dog walker and every insurance company I came across had a maximum of 6 dogs per walk, even if you were with another walker insured for their 6, the insurance was invalidated if there were more than 6 dogs in total. I phoned a few companies to check as in my early days I used to meet up with other walkers. I would report them to the council if they have that many dogs off lead grr!

After over fifty years on the road I have of course met all sorts of bad drivers .
The rudest and funniest was a driver who pulled in and gave me a mouth full for impersonating a police officer .
Fatty ,very dark bay ID , was wearing a hi viz sheet I was wearing blue breeches blue hat and at a hi viz coat .
On the good side I have seen a great change in cyclists recently they are being much more horse aware .

Agree about the cyclists G - we always had a good relationship with them here, but the majority used not to know how important it is to announce their approach from behind. Someone has done a wonderful education job, and for the last couple of years 90% sound a bell or say hello.

That woman has serious issues .
While you can understand but not condone people losing it in the moment that was not in the moment and therefore she’s a very very dangerous individual who really needs the authorities to look at if she’s fit to be in charge of a car .

Sister I were out once on a big ID and a finely built Appaloosa, with loads of hi-viz, including leg wraps. A car with 4 young men overtook us very slowly with the passenger's windows wound down. Sis and I were both expecting the worst. Just as they were abreast of us, one of the passengers leant out and shouted 'Nice socks!':D:D:D

I find boy-racer type some of the most considerate drivers; the ones that fill be with dread are old men closely followed by men in large dark cars on their way home from work and women in SUVs with children on-board. I appreciate women work and drive badly in large dark cars as do men with children in SUV btw!

This is part of my hi viz gear. Photo one showing the leg bands available from e-bay £4.99 for 2. The second photo is of a couple of cycle lights that I have attached to the back of my hi viz which my partner bought me the other day - £1.99 for two. Also my lovely hi viz exercise sheet that I bought from Your Horse Live in 2017 - it was a Xmas present off my Dad.

People on the yard take the mickey but I don't care. At least I know I have done everything I can to make us both visible and give us that 3 seconds of extra thinking/braking distance by wearing hi viz.

Hello fellow hi viz fan - people joke they can see me from a mile away which is exactly effect I'm looking for!

And to think that there are people that hack out without any hi-viz at all!

Once I showed a woman from a previous yard a photo of her daughter riding her horse and herself stood at the side of said horse on my arrival back at the yard from my hack. It was starting to get towards dusk. She claimed she had 'forgotten' to put it on and that I was being awkward and that I could see her quite clearly even though from where I was about 330 yards away she practically 'dissapeared' into the hedge line and road. I thought 'let her get on with it.'

When she discovers the sadness and overwhelming despair she will feel after her horse is hit by a car or her daughter hospitalised or worse she might change her mind set. Some people you really can't reason with so I give up trying.

Wasn’t worth starting a new thread so bringing up this one again instead as I had my first abusive driver experience today and need to rant!!

I was on my way home on my 5yo happy as larry, met a few cars that morning but all was well.

There was someone coming up behind me in a white 19 plate vauxhall high top (not sure on make) and I asked them to stop. What they didn’t realise is the reason I asked them to stop was because they were trying to come around me but they couldn’t see that there was another car coming towards me the other way and I was trying to stop them having a head on collision.

Queue woman screaming out her window at me saying “you can’t expect people to stop for you when you ride at rush hour” I tried to answer her but stupid coward wheel span and sped off - only to have to slam the brakes on 2 seconds later when she realised the road ahead was blocked 😂👍

My horse didn’t give her a blind bit of notice bless her, she was too busy watching the ponies in the field next door.

I wanted to explain why I had asked her to slow down and stop, I also wanted to explain that I have work and a life to deal with too and I have the right to ride whenever I like.
It’s too dark for me to ride after work now so I’ve been riding in the mornings and going in to work later. The latest I can get into work and still get my hours in is 11am. Mucking out, feeding, riding and turning out two horses, going home, showering, changing and getting to work for 11am is not easy and I don’t really have any time to spare to hang around for rush hour to finish before I ride. I was out at first light to try and get it done asap.

...Besides, the road I was riding on was a COUNTRY LANE! It’s single track with passing points and surrounded by farmland with signs every 100 yards telling you to watch out for horses. I mean what was she expecting?! If you don’t want to meet horse riders on your way to work stick to the bloody A-roads!!

Grrrrr!

Sorry for long rant but had to get it out somewhere.

Sorry you’ve had bother :(
I often think god I wish I’d said that, or they might understand if I said xyz but the reality is you’re more than likely wasting your breath * sigh *

as echoed so many times, hat cam! That could have been a nasty collision.
glad you and po are safe x

I haven’t had any bother for years until Sunday! A lady shouted at me as horse decided to take a cr*p in the road outside her house. Not on the path or her drive. (
This made me smile. When we were young the coal was delivered by horse drawn cart. Draft horses - . My late Mother in law would wait with a shovel and always go out to scoop up the horse droppings to put on her roses.

I have a new hat cam and am considering going for a walk round the lanes on foot wearing it. A policeman advised me that they are interested in 'near misses' with, and abuse of, pedestrians too and it would appear that some of the people driving like nutters shouldn't be on the road at all. My understanding is that if you have evidence of them doing something out of order the police can ask to see their documents and if they don't have them a whole new conversation takes place.

That’s just wrong on every level, I hate hat cams and the thought of smug people walking around looking for some misdemeanour that they can report to the police makes me shudder. It’s not your job to police others !

Hi, just wondering how people many other people get verbally abused when hacking out on roads! I took my youngster out to try and get her used to traffic today and on a stretch of road in my village that's a 30mph limit I was shouted at and told to get on the path, told to f**k off and had a land rover rev his engine and fly past close enough for me to be able to almost touch the car. Can't believe how rude, impatient and inconsiderate people are nowadays!
regularly, sometimes most hacks but i have a go pro if I need to report the idiots.

Had a lovely chap attempt to squeeze his car past the back of my pony and and Asda delivery van this morning. If my pony had swished his tail he would have been able to wipe the number plate clean 😳
The guy was not impressed when my husband who was in front on my mare turned and shouted for him to drop back as he was too close.
The guy carried on squeezing past and shouted something as he passed us. Needles to say the air was a little blue after that
