My veteran horse is now only covered for accidents as there were so many exclusions in place I was paying loads of money out for nothing. My horse has a shoulder injury due to slipping on the yard whilst tied up - will my insurance cover this does anyone know? I'm worried to ring up insurance company in case I 'say the wrong thing' and they won't pay out! Any advice please or should I just fill out a claim form and send it off?

Depends what the injury is and what their definition of 'accident' is. Does it state accidental injury with visible wound for example?

If the horse has fallen, had a kick bashed into something and subsequently has a visble injury (ie a bump/cut etc) then, in general that would be considered and accidental injury. If he has just twisted and strained/pulled something then that is less likely to be covered. Checked you wording, check what the definition of injury/accident is. Accident's a very broad term and could essentially mean it covers everything other than illness but the fact you have mentioned it is a veteran makes me wonder whether it is more an accidental injury only and things like pulled muscles or tendons etc wouldn't necessarily be covered.

veteran insurance cover - whoever you are with - covers for accidents. some expect there to be an skin wound, others not. Always be lead by your insurers, what does it cost - a phone call. They will be able to advise better than anyone else ...

Phone your insurance company & tell them what has happened. They will tell you if you are covered. If you are with a reputable company they will not try to squirm out of settling the claim, they will advise you & pay for treatment if you are covered.

Presumably your vet will be submitting the claim to the company if you decide to make one. I would certainly let him/her do this if he agrees. If it was an accident then the insurance company should cover the claim, less the excess. However, you will only know when the claim is considered by the insurers.

Incidentally, I hope you are covered for public liability on either your insurance or through BHS Gold Membership. Very unwise not to be.

Mine specified visible external accidental injury so basically stitches. Also had excess of 300 quid. I decided that for a wound that big I wouldn't put her through it and opted for bhs gold instead. Check wording carefully and speak to them.
