The box rest babe should be going out again next week (hopefully) now he is a bit of an idiot and just does not know when to keep himself out of trouble. He was in the big herd when i first got him, but after 3 quite bad injuries i put him into the smaller herd (6 including him). Now he has had a couple of bites off my other horse (now known as Jaws) but at catch in time only, but last weekend he got himself cornered when they were having a mad half hour and he jumped out of the field and sustained his current various injuries. He is recovering well BUT do i put him back in with the others the 6 horse, or do i put him in a field with my old mare?. Concerns are - if he goes in with the other 5, he could be injured again, although now we know he is a bit of a loon, we can monitor the exciting or cold boring days when they have a tank around the field. If i put him in the field with just my old girl will he become too dependant on her and to be honest when the weather is poor she just wants in, and will he jump back into his old field?
My yard owners are brilliant and have given me all these options, and are happy for me to do whatever i want now, or even change things again later in the winter.

I would like to put him back in the 6 horse field, as ok this is a bad injury but it is the first one he has had in their and i worry that he will annoy the old girl a little too much.

What do you lot think?

think if I were you I would be inclined to see how he gets on with your old mare first - there are some horses who just seem to get into trouble or cause problems and he might well just be one of them. If he has had 3 bad injuries then that would suggest he hasn't learnt his lesson with the big herd so I wouldnt try that again. He might be fine with your old girl so worth a try! We have some horses (including mine) who are turned out solo because they dont just get the concept of playing nicely and keep coming back in with just too many injuries. They can chat over the fence quite happily!

Id try him with the mare.
My horse cost me a fortune in vets fees, all field related injuries. He was on a yard with about 25 other horses, not much land so they all went together, never a problem with my previous horse. I was so stressed and constantly worrying about what I would find next.
I managed to move him to a yard where he shared a field with 3 other geldings, great, all was well for a while then he palled up with a big WB and they had a great time. My rugs were in shreds, the playing got worse and worse and I found him with a fractured leg. He recovered but had to be turned out alone at first and Ive never put him back in with them so hes on his own, in the same field but seperated by electric fencing. Yes I feel mean but he can touch, bite and play over the fence and he still does! I do toy with the idea of getting him a companion but theres no stables at the mo, hes on a private yard and theres no where else in the area that has so few horses. Most having 20 plus, so for now it seems my best option.
