There is an elderly man who lives near me who has recently got a puppy. He used to have a quiet old dog that was happy to amble along side him on his walk to the shop every morning. Unfortunately he must have passed away and somebody got him a puppy.

I am not sure what breed it is but looks like it will be a fairly big dog. The problem is this old man uses a walking stick and walks very slowly and has his puppy in his other hand. He walks along a very busy road in the town centre at the busiest time of the day with cars racing around. He has no control over the puppy and it just leaps around, it jumped at my car a few weeks back and I had to swerve so I didn't hit it.

This morning when it was misbehaving he was poking it with his walking stick so the dog jumped into the road and narrowly avoided death again! It's not going to take long and something very bad is going to happen.

Is there anyone I can call who is able to help/advise the man? I just feel so bad for the puppy as its not his fault and clearly is becoming badly behaved as the only form of discipline he gets is a poke with a walking stick. This morning I nearly ripped it off of him and took it away cuz I was so worried and upset!

Think I will have too. I will follow him home to find out where he lives. I just wonder who went and bought it for him? He is hardly capable of going out and finding it himself. He would have been fine with an old rescue or something :(

The animal warden might be willing to give some advice, but really, I think there is little you can do. :(

An old man near me and his wife have a Yorkie and got a border Collie puppy to go with it! That didn't last long, I don't know what happened to the dog, but after that, they got a retriever puppy!

This puppy soon grew up into a big strong friendly dog that would regularly escape and take itself for walks or if the man took it for a walk on a lead, it would pull him over. I've seen him out with it, with him holding onto a fence post with one hand and trying to hold the dog back with the other!

This dog allegedly went back to the breeder at about 18 months old. Really upsetting as it was all totally predictable. :(

It's just awful. I keep bumping into him every morning when I walk my dog and the puppy pulls into the main road to get to my dog on the other side! I am just waiting to hear the yelps as it gets hit by a car. I think I will walk at a different time as I just don't think I can deal with seeing it hurt :(

Why do people do it!

Cinnamon Trust. They help elderly people with their pets so I would contact them and see if they can then help this old man with training the puppy. Dog warden won't really be able to help.

Think this is the best option, but that's assuming he WANTS help. I was witness to an accident with an older dog that leapt at a car outside my house a couple of months ago. Luckily the dog got away with scratches and bruising, but I agree that it's a matter of time.

Its a shame this has happened, you'd think whoever got it would have thought to rehome an older quiet dog knowing he used a walking stick. Not sure I'd have got one at all if that's the way he treats them

Thanks everyone. I will contact cinnamon trust and see if they can contact him and help.

My husband has told me to not get involved but I feel for the puppy!

I can't imagine him with a St. Bernard!! That must have been awful.

Why don't you ask him if he'd like some help? You could offer to accompany him or even walk the puppy for him with your other dog? He might be really struggling and in all fairness what can the dog warden do that's not removing the dog from his care..... Which doesn't seem very fair to me.

I'd love to help him and would if I had the time. My dog is not a fan of bouncy puppies so its not like I could go along when I walk my dog. With two horses, dog and full time job I struggle as it is. I just wish he wouldn't walk it along that road. It could jump about all it wants in a field!
