Thinking or radical career change thinking of these positions , probably never likely to happen but just wondered other peoples views, especially anyon who is any of these ???
I'm an Accountant - Iam seriously considering a career change but can't think what the hell else to do. So can I ask for suggestions as well for a 50 year old desperate to get out of the rat race.
Accountancy and any legal position would require several years of study to obtain the necessary qualification - so unless either of these jobs really light your fire I wouldn't go there!
I'm another one (in training) and whilst the salary for qualified staff is good, it's hard work and can be an unpleasant environment to work in at times.
A lot depends on the firm, generally speaking the larger the firm, the more typical 'corporate' environment aspect applies, and with it the associated long hours, tight deadlines, competitiveness manifesting in bitchiness and backstabbing and a disproportionately high number of idiots as colleagues.
Having said that, you learn a huge amount and this is particularly true if you work for a firm that offers a wide range of services.
Whilst accountancy may offer the £££ to keep horses, it often doesn't provide the time or flexibility to actually do much with them, which is true of many jobs these days.
Procurement, i.e. I buy things for companies, and by 'things' I mean everything from aircraft parts, to requiements for an Antartic expedition, to life saving services.
I have many (oh many, many, many lol) years of experience and am now a consultant, so get a reasonable day rate - which goes towards back office support, account, insurance, etc etc etc.
.
It's an interesting career overall - there can be a lot of travel if you want it, there's a large proportion of interaction with stakeholders (some fascinating and interesting people!). Encompasses legal, accountancy, project managaement.
I'm a judge part time - a legal professional the rest. I did come to legal training a bit late - my mid 20's. I absolutely love my job and would never change it. But it took a good 20 years to get here and a lot of work.
I would highly reccommend law as a career - but it is easier if you start the training at 18. You have to plan for about 4 years full time uni study. More if you do it part time. Then at least 2 years on various training contracts which are not particularly well paid and often not family freindly.
If you want the experience of being a sort of judge you could consider trying for Magistrate. You don't need any legal qualifications. But it isn't paid well enough to make a career out of so you would probably need something else as well. Or you could look at the various tribunal services which often have lay members. For example the employment tribunal consists of a panel of one legally qualified judge and 2 lay people. The General Medical Council is the same. (And their lay members get treated better!). There are a number of tribunal services making use of non legally qualified people.
Yep, there are lots of accountants here, I'm another one! My advice; whilst the salary is reasonable, there is not much spare time to enjoy the horses. However, I wouldn't have been able to afford to breed my beautiful ponies if I didn't have the salary. If you do become an accountant, use the qualification to set up in Business or something completely off the wall
I agree with above comments, not the most enjoyable job in the world, its stressful and hard work at times but it has allowed me to buy a property to keep my horses at home which has always been my dream
Also once you have the qualification you can do various types of jobs with it, from private practice, giving tax advice to individuals, corporate jobs or use it as a way into specialist roles such as management consultancy/ business planning.
Overall I'm glad with my career choice, but i would like to go into something less demanding over the next few years as i m getting too old for the long hours
Thanks guys , some interesting views !!! lol ,Sheriff / judge appeals to me as does the law career as I would like to think i was making a positive difference to our ever more disgusting society !!! by hopefully managing to lock up some bad people !!!
Watched some horrendous child porn sting operation tv program recently where police where catching paedophiles etc and it just makes me really ill when you hear or read about these kind of people who commit heinous crimes and get very little real punishment !! i dont have children , but i always think of my little brother and friends children and my blood runs cold thinking of the kind of things people do to poor innocent children .
and the recent nursery workers paedophile stories , it is sickening .
I would so be in favour of bring back corporal punishment , rapists, paedophiles and pre meditated murderers would def be in line for death penalty !!!
Sorry , bit of a rant there !!
lol
shay : I have been looking into the various magistrate / tribunal type positions as you mentioned , thanks .Im pleased to hear you love your job !!
Most jobs these days if they pay well eneough to be able to be comfortable and have your horses and hobbies etc , then they have such long hours you are left with little time to really enjoy them , as everyone has said but then agaian , you have to have a compromise and if you are lucky enough to bear your job or even better , enjoy it or love it , and be able to have the things u want, we have to make the best of what we have .
Another accountant here. I find the pay is ok but the hours and stress are rubbish!! It can also be a little boring, I'm hoping for a move into Forensic accountancy as that seems a little more exciting, particularly if you get to catch some robbing cheatin scumbags up! lol
