hi, just wondering peoples opinions on accuracy of using weight tapes, and also which is more accurate, using the tape measure, or using a formula based on lengths?
I do have a weight tape but question its efficacy. The reason being that my fatties don't increase their girth by very much....the difference between summer and winter might only be one hole - but they do put on fat around shoulder and thigh once they get a taste of spring grass.

Ditto. They're good for getting a rough idea of how much a horse weighs, for example if you're working out weights for towing purposes, but horses don't increase in girth size all that much when they put weight on. My mare puts most of her spring weight on in 'pads' over the shoulders, although strangely not on her hips and rump like most! In any case, it's missed by the weigh tape, which says she's only gained 5kg or so since being hunting fit in the winter - I think not!
I think they give a very rough guide to weight, the only true way to ascertain weight is on a weigh bridge. I know people who eventually have used a weigh bridge & have been shocked to find out the true size of their horse.....so much heavier than they thought.
Weigh tapes are not accurate, despite someone on here insisting one make is, non are. They are a good guide and mostly useful for guaging any loss or gain of weight. They are accurate enough for worming purposes.
I use mine as a rough guide and probably use it a bit to far back by using his microchip freeze mark as a guide. At least this way I'm weighing at the same place each time. However, I've just read on this site Weighing your Horse
that the tape should not go vertically around the horse but at a slight diagonal (/). Will try that tonight and see if it makes any differnce!
