We have a wonderful GSP bitch. We have wanted another one to keep her company and to accompany us on our shooting days for a long time but nothing has come up with as good of a pedigree. So we decided to find an amazing sire and have some puppies!
we are so excited. She’s on day 52 now and we had her scan on day 42. They counted 8 puppies but said there might be some hiding! What are your experiences with the scan numbers? Are they usually accurate?

Rarely accurate imo. I scanned my own dog thinking there was 6...she had 3. The lafy scanning with me was a human dr gynaecologist..she could get over the difference between humans and dogs lol. Scans to confirm pregnancy. Xrays to give an idea on counts is more helpful...on an empty stomach and after pooping for clearest images. But over 8 or 10 it gets harder to see on x-ray as well.
Joys of canine repro work!

As stated, quite inaccurate. Scans are mostly useful just to check for heart beats. Xrays are better for numbers but can still get a bit tricky if there are lots of puppies and also mum may need a sedation if won't lay still conscious.

If we do pregnancy scans at work the vets I work with will confirm pregnancy but always avoid giving number if possible!

Oh Lordy. Frans overdue by a day! (According to the scan) she’s 66 days from the first mating date but the scan indicted she took on the second mating.
she’s not eaten her dinner and has a bit of gloopy clear discharge occasionally, she was also panting a bit and nesting last night. I think it’ll be soon! ? anyway as I’ll be ringing the vet tomorrow if nothing happens ?

Exciting and scary. Will you be sleeping near her, I know I would be? If you sleep at all that is.

I’ve actually slept downstairs with her for three nights now just in case. Lol so yes we’ll be snuggled up tonight again. Bless her. It is really scary I don’t know how breeders manage it, it really takes it out of you emotionally x

One of the junior vets in the practice I was with for many years had two gorgeous black and tan terriers which he adored. He bred from one of them and the senior vet told me he went round to see how she was doing when she was in labour and found junior vet pacing up and down the street he was so stressed. Senior vet was quite bemused, didn't understand such behaviour. Bitch had her pups fine if I remember rightly but has always stuck in my mind as nice to know even vets get stressed when it is their own.
Looking forward to seeing what yours has.
