So Ace has been lame for 3 weeks now and it has been getting steadily worse despite rest and anti inflammatories - the vet has seen him a couple of times but could find no heat, no swelling, no injury and no reason for the lameness.

He went into the vets today for X-rays and I honestly didn’t expect him to come home - greyhounds are horribly prone to bone cancer, and whilst he is still a youngish dog at 6 years old it does occur sometimes.

I had talked it over with greyhound owning friends and we were all prepared that this might well be the findings from the X-ray, in which case I would have had him PTS immediately. Bone cancer is one of the most excruciatingly painful diseases a dog can have, and I’d never want to prolong any suffering. I even left him at the vets with a horrible old slip lead and I took his house collar off so I’d have nothing that I had to collect from them!

BUT such fantastic news, the X-rays showed no signs of bone cancer ??? He has arthritic changes in one ‘wrist’ on his front right leg, so he has begun a series of laser treatments on that today - but he is home against all the odds, I am so happy ??????

Still recovering from the sedation....

Welcome back Ace . You can relax a bit now Lev..thank goodness it wasn’t the dreaded Big C.
I hate winters here in the alps, as my arthritis flares..I find heat helps..a hot gel pad on my hip works wonders,a heated under blanket in the winter and lasonil rubs..for him a good linament on the joint.
Hope he has a good sleep and is feeling brighter tomorrow.

really good link here..

Brilliant news, I'd wondered about the dreaded 'C' so this is fantastic.
Sure he'll be treated like a king and hopefully he'll respond to treatment soon too.

Thank you all for your lovely comments :) You know how much my dogs mean to me, and it would have been horribly cruel for Ace to go that way - he had a very hard racing career with a horrible trainer (who has featured on one of those 'greyhound abuse exposed' programmes for the way they keep their dogs) and it has been wonderful seeing him blossom over the past year into a happy, relaxed hound who really enjoys life.

I know I go on and on about terriers now but one thing my mum said to me really resonated - when we thought I was going to lose Ace she said "you won't get another greyhound will you, it is too hard for you to go through this"

I didnt have to even think - I said immediately "oh no, I will always have at least two greyhounds" - they are just wonderful dogs :)

when a breed in in your blood it’s hard to shake off...in my heart I’m a st. poodle girl. My head says this third standard should be my last..arthritis is starting in my fingers..so 3 hour grooms every ten days are less of a joy.
I cut down from two standards together to just the one and a small sidekick schnauzer.
The schnauzer ,stripped ,is a breeze...Easy on us both.
who knows the future?
At your younger age,two gh would be a charm ,with the added terrier buzz thrown in..but to say never again, oooofh,it’s a huge step.

I didn't see your post until now, but just wanted to say how very glad I am that it's not bone cancer. ? What a huge relief for you. It's something I worry about my greys having. I now have my fifth one, and so far my dogs have been lucky and not succumbed to that horrible illness.

I know exactly what you mean about always having greyhounds. When I discovered the joys of them, I knew I'd found "my" breed.
I hope Ace starts to feel better soon. He's such a lucky boy to have found a home with you, after what he went through. ? His past is one of the reasons why I'm so anti racing. He's gorgeous btw.
