Anyone else have achey knees when riding? Particularly if i'm hack for a couple of hours, or if its cold out. Any idea what I can do about it? I am only 24!!

Do you have a old injury or something along those lines?

I have a old injury to my knee cartilage which i damaged few years back and that can make my knees ache after done alot of riding.

If not then sorry no other suggestions.

I'm 20 and my knees are like this, well they get painful after so long. They are fine if im schooling or jumping but not on long hacks, in the cold or if i sit in the same position for too long.
I just put up with it on hacks, sometimes helps if i straigten my leg. with the cold - last winter i used to wear tights or leggings under my trousers, jods etc to keep my knees warmer.

i used to get terribly achey knees on long rides. then one day i put my stirrups down an extra hole and they miraculously were pain-free! it could be as simple as that - give it a try if you feel secure enough with a hole longer!

I agree with slightly longer leathers and Sprenger (style) stirrups. I have a cheaper pair of flexi-stirrups but they do the job just fine. I have ankle issues, rather than knees, but there has been a big improvement since I had the stirrups.

If you don't already take one, perhaps a joint supplement might help? OH takes shark cartilage for his knees but a general glucosamine and msm one might help?

Supplements make me feel old! But I suppose it can't hurt, trip to wilko's this weekend then.

I wondered about the flex-stirrups, will invest in a pair.

Thanks!

Oo, I never thought about posting about my dodgy ankles. They're really weak and hurt if I jump or hack too long, so do my knees, which I now think might be related to a cartilage injury I had a few years ago, thanks for pointing that out Amys_Babies, makes a lot of sense.

Think I might try flexi-stirrups too

My knees ache (but they're knackered), more so in cold weather. So I am ultra-unfashionable in cold weather and ride with legwarmers pulled up over my knees!!!!

My Knees are both really bad and one has curicate ligament damage as well

I find that sprenger stirrups do really help and also the Human version of Cortaflex really helps

Also gloucosamine

I used to get an achey knee and just assumed it was old age creeping up on me. Then I discovered one day that when I was wearing boots and chaps, my knee didn't hurt any more. It was so bad I had to stop the trotting and walk along till it subsided a bit. So the problem for me was lower down the leg, and by giving ankles/lower legs more support its' stopped the knee problem.

I used to ride in either dubarrys or the riding muck boots.

I get really bad knees all the time and I'm 24! When I was at school I saw the doctor who thought I had a lack of fluid behind my knee cap (or something like that) and not to worry when I'm a kid but come back if its a problem later. They also said that I shouldn't do any high impact exercise, including horse riding. I haven't been back coz I'm scared they're gonna tell me I shouldn't be riding at all! And also that I should lose some weight lol
Anyway, I'm sure your problem is nothing so serious! What I wanted to say is Volterol gel is good for pain relief. Obviously it's not a long term solution but does help at the time on bad days!
