I've recently sprained my achilles tendon due to my favourite Muckboot wellies wearing away and rubbing it. It's so sore I can't even wear my more floppy, rubbish wellies which is ridiculous considering all the mud we have.
Does anyone else have this problema and what do you do?

You need something wiht a wee heel to support your achilles with. You get heel lifts for putting in flat shoes that might help, then you can wear your wellies. Try Boots or any good chemist.

I ruptured mine a two weeks ago. It really hurts (esp when you get out of bath (something to do with it swelling) -I wouldnt advise it! lol

It also helps if you ride with no stirrups as 'Heels down' is forbidden with this injury, so no cycling and restrict your walking in flat shoes.

I was told to keep of it but try to do small circles so it will gradually loosen

Its a really horrible injury and sorry to be the messenger of bad news but once you injure it, it never really heals. So lots of sore heels over winter im afraid! lol x

I've got some heel raisers in my trainers and they seem to be working as it's not so sore this morning. I'm just worried that over the winter I won't be able to wear wellies which seems unfeasible as a horse owner in this climate!
My boyfriend actually snapped his 15 years ago and he hasn't been able to wear a pair of boots since. I hope this isn't going to happen to me, what on earth am I going to do when it comes to shows!

Heel raiser/insoles etc are brill (although I would take advantage of perfect excuse for new shoes!) lol

Unfortunatly, depending on how bad the injury is, it will never really leave you. I would invest in some good quality wellies/muckers & get heel raisers fitted...its really all you can do.

P.s. I find walking down stairs sideways, with your foot flat also helps! lol very easy to forget yourself and run down & nearly break your neck...Bad times! lol x

It does heal! But you have to really work at it. I got really bad tendonitis on mine from running, so bad that I couldn't walk. And now I can sprint in spikes without any pain, though it still stiffens up if I don't stretch. Its very strong now though whereas when I injured it, it wouldn't even support my weight.

Firstly, tendons take a long time to heal, about 3 months, so you have to avoid aggravating it for at least that time. Dont wear the footwear that did it. If its only a rub it might settle down much quicker. Cut a hole in your wellies if you can - or just put up with wet feet - better than achilles injury.

Ice it twice a day for 10 mins eg with frozen peas. I also did self massage twice a day for 10 mins, which is sore at first but helped get the blood supply to it. I also had physio, ultrasond and accupuncture once or twice a week.

When its stronger, you can do heel raises on it, building up to doing them with weights. And when healed, keep stretching your calf muscles, to avoid it happening again! And keep an eye on footwear.

Ditto the heel raisers, if you can get your Gp to send you to hospital, mine did and they said that my arches had dropped but also that my tendons have shrunk and lost elasticity due to age (42!?!) and lack of exercise. (edited to add that the lack of exercise is due to health problems NOT laziness:o)

They have made some foot supports from moulds of my feet which I am now just getting used to, but I have to say that I now notice a difference when I don't wear them.

I am also doing some *very* gentle stretching exercises with an elastic band thingy the physio gave me but was warned to be very careful not to over do things.

It definatly gets worse when I have been walking over the field (very uneven) so that might be something you will want to limit as much as possible.
