I have a horse that has torn its Achillies tendon and is 19 years old, what is the chance of full recovery and what is the best advice for recovering?

My horse has done something similar, his achilles was partially severed, only 6 weeks ago so cannot offer much help he has done 6 weeks of box rest and has just now gone for 5 weeks swimming. When he walks out his fetlock on that leg drops lower than the other so still very fragile. He has also worn an arc machine every day.
It seems a relatively unusual site for injury, the tendons which are usually damaged are lower down the leg.
Let me know how you get on, I have been told many horror stories of horses completely severing tendons and making a complete recovery.

She had swelling around the hock, totally sound, no heat. The vet said it was a thoroughpin, but after a scan yesterday it was confirmed she had damaged her Achilles tendon. Has been told one months box rest, problem is she is a cribber and needs walking out to release gases!!! Not going to be a good box rester

Oh heck....I think my chap has done that! Last Tuesday suddenly couldn't put his hind foot to the ground....got better so could walk but heat and swelling over and round the point of hock....argh! Just had seven months treatment on the same hock for arthritis!!! Suspect not related as different area but same leg! What do you have to do after the months box rest?

A friends mare injured her Achilles and she did recover well enough to retire in the field for many years. Her mare had the added complication of pulling the SDFT tendon off the hock though so was left mechanically lame. Bizarrely my own mare's SDFT has come off her hock a couple of months back and that started showing with a large thoroughpin, slightly capped hock, resting leg toe pointing, before it totally popped off.
