This year is obviously a mast year and we are at new yard with copious amounts of acorns which I have currently fenced off. My question is where do you dispose of said acorns once you start to gather them up, is the muck heap ok (we have local farmer come and collect said muck heap) and this was recently collected so muck heap just started again. Want to open up fenced off area once all acorns have shed.

Not on the muck heap! Nobody will want to spread muck across fields that is laced with acorns. If no other way, then bag up in feed sacks to burn.
I shovel them up and pop outside my gate, as its common land and the trees are actually on their boundary, so am just returning them....

It certainly is a mast year, I have never seen so many acorns on our trees. One very large old tree has produced 11 empty shavings sacks full, all of which we have taken to the council tip. The tree hasn't finished dumping yet either and there are another 6 trees to go. Many hours are spent raking and picking up.

The hot summer must have triggered the oaks into some sort of acorn frenzy, even the size of the acorns is far bigger than normal. The horses despite being well fed and plenty of grass, make a bee line to the fallen acorns too which is so frustrating. I have taped the canopy area off but it looks such a mess with spider webs of electric tape everywhere. We need a proper gale to dump the lot and get it over with.

Welcome CG ?

Ludo is going nuts for the acorns when I take him out to pick in the hedgerow, pun intended ?

Anyone know if it's safe to let him have a handful, it's limiting our verge choices to avoid them completely?

I wouldn't because they seem to get a taste for them once they start and there is no stopping them seeking them out then.

The yard next door to me had a field with an oak tree and the horses would gallop to it when turned out, they did eventually tape it off after one horse became quite ill and was pts although the vets were never sure if it was the acorns or not that killed him, he was quite old and had other health issues so it was probably a combination of things but I doubt the acorns helped.

We've fenced trees off and are tipping ours into woodland (also on the property) so the deer/squirrels/rabbits can have them but the horses can't. Lots.of horses affected in my area this year.
