Just wondered what peoples opinions were on this...

How much is too much in one dose?

How long till they start to work?

How many do you feed and for what?

I know what I think but lots of people think different so want to know your views!

At work we say up to 4 tablets for mares and 2 for colts/geldings 45 minutes prior to whatever the activity it is needed for. Only give the colts/gelding 2 as it relaxes their boy bits and sometimes this can cause them to swell and not be able to retract it. Erghh. We use it mainly for turning out horses that have been on box rest or are new.

I have ridden on them - with Murphy after clipping him, thinking it hadn't worked, it had but only started working on the way home from clipping and he tripped over. Also with Tarquin when he was first broken as he had a very scary experience and was having trouble settling so I gave him half a tube of sedalin the first time I tried to ride him in the school and then gave him 2 - 3 acp each time I rode him until I thought he was ok. I wouldn't go jumping on it or hacking although lots of people hunt on it.
At work it is used a lot with box resters, plenty of people frown on it but it a has its place for safety's sake IMO.

I think horses can react very differently. Last time I used ACP was for the colts second farrier visit, he was sleepy but still quite a handful, must of had about 6, we gave him about 30 min to kick in.

When I use for Clipping I'm in the 30's find that ok my test does would be 10 and then decide from there and always give on empty tummy

Once had 40 in a 12hh pony that then had to be injected by the vet for something and was so sharpe to inject it needed that many before it was sedated by injection

Each horse is diff and you have to try each ind horse to see how it works normally takes 30 mins or so and last few hours and don't use on Stallions

People I worked for hunted P2P horses on a few but never jumped and tried not to get out of trot

ACP is a difficult drug each horse/pony will react differently from different quantities. Also horses can 'snap' out of it's effects for a short period of time which can be very dangerous especially if the handler then gives more.

Sedalin in my opinion is far better as gives a more consistent overall reaction from the horse and failing that get it sedated.

I have personally never been a fan of ACP, i think seeing a horse 'snap out' of its effects and go well crazy whilst been clipped in an enclosed area really when I was young gave me the initial dislike to it. Although no one was injured was almost a very different story.
