Please can anyone answer a quick question?
Horse is going to be tested tomorrow am. He is a pig to deal with. Vet usually works on him by giving him a quick sedative in the muscle (in his backside) leaving it to work for a few minutes then we get on with whatever.

Is it possible to sedate a horse for an ACTH test before we pull the blood or will the sedation affect the ACTH test results.

(sorry but this is the one question I forget to ask the vet before booking the appointment today)

That's a tricky one because if the horse is stressed in any way it can affect the results of the ACTH so he will need to be calm.
I would think your vet will know the answer to your question but I will try asking on your behalf on the EC/IR yahoo group and let you know if I get an answer before tomorrow.

thanks Muff. I did consider phoning the vet but I would basically have got the staff not the vet so decided to wait till tomorrow if necessary. I know about the stress levels so that was why I asked.
thanks again

Hi Pat, I did read on my searches that it shouldn't affect the results. Bloods are drawn when a horse is being operated on and sent for analysis all the time so maybe they take account of that when reading the results.
I think there are some vets on this forum so maybe they'll chip in later?
