Following on from my escaping horse thread and my success of keeping him contained last night (hooray!) Could you all tell me how you go about feeding ad-lib hay?

I thought about buying a round bale but would my single horse eat it fast enough that it wouldn't go off?

What do you all do?

At the moment I am just throwing hay out on the ground 3 times a day. I was giving it to him in a big tub trug bucket but he ate it too quickly.

I use large wooden pallet crates. The trick seems to be keeping them from sleeping/ pooing on the hay before they've eaten it. Lots of imaginative ideas using wheely bins and large veg recycling containers all trying to do the same thing so maybe have a look around and see what you have to hand. Large tractor tyres are also good.
Some horses don't like eating it after is't got wet so maybe put something in your fieldshelter (if you have one)
I think with a big round bale your horse would (if like mine) make a lovely nest in it and lots would be wasted, it may well get wet and start to rot before he's eaten it all.

I use large wooden pallet crates as well, and have even cut apart an old haynet so that it is just one strip of netting and attached it to the crate so it slows down the time it takes to eat.
