Adder bite

One of our poor sheepdogs got bitten on the back leg by an adder earlier this week His leg swelled up to twice its normal size but otherwise he was ok. Gave him synulox, metacam and piriton before rushing him down to the vet and they said that we had done everything they could do for him so we just brought him home again. The swelling is going down slowly and other than the swelling you wouldn't actually know anything is wrong. He is lucky that is is a larger dog and also the fact he was bitten on the leg. An old couple who use to rent the farmhouse on the estate had their Yorkshire Terrier bitten in the face and it was touch and go if she would survive.

I hope he continues to improve. I’m forever vigilant but I’ve no idea what I’d do if one of mine got bitten in the depths of the woods, miles from the carpark. I doubt I could even carry little Goose very far.

I'm as sure as I can be that I lost a cat to an adder bite.

My standard poodle was bitten by a snake, more likely a grass snake as near a lake. He developed an abcess in his groin which I assumed was a grass seed and was extremely quiet, fortunately saw an Aussie vet who immediately said snake bite. Also that even non poisonous snakes have dirty mouths and bites go septic. We nearly lost him, he was a very sick dog indeed. Good luck with yours OP.

Hope he continues to improve. Saw our first adder earlier this year when on holiday. Saw our youngest dog suddenly swerve and leap in the air and then stood dead still.
When we got to her we saw the adder sitting on the pathway, luckily it didn't get her. Never expected to see one on the path.

We did too many moons ago. Since the area became more built up I haven’t seen one since.

Wishing a speedy recovery, it can be really uncomfortable for them during the healing.

Years ago when we were on holiday in Norfolk our border collie got bitten by an adder, we didn't see it or realize til early next morning when his leg was the size of a tree trunk, cue rest of holiday visiting the vets every morning to have dressing changed, all his skin peeled of the paw which is something I will never forget but he made a full recovery thank goodness x Hope your dog does the same x

One of mine got bitten, she’s fairly hard so we didn’t actually know until a massive abscess came up on her side. Took to vets and they found the bite marks. It was a while ago but apart from all the skin coming off her side I don’t think she was actually very bothered and recovered fine so fingers crossed for yours

I was thinking about him today, sounds like he has been very lucky.
I have known a huge German shepherd bitten once at the vets it took 2yrs to heal up and a newfoundland who had to have a toe removed after a bite so its not always straight forward.

The year mine was bitten was a cool damp summer much like this one and I heard of 4 dogs, including mine and a horse all bitten by snakes, think the poor horse died. Never heard of so many before or since, I assume the snakes are sluggish and don't get out of the way as quickly as they usually do.
