Adding oil - how much?

Hmm, so adding oil to a horses feed, how much is the guide line amount? I tend to add a quick drizzle, but hear figures such as 100ml per 100kg of horse?

Can someone confirm for me? My horse has a very good coat condition and energy levels but am trying to bulk him up a bit!

Any ideas on figures and which oil do you recommend?! Thanks.
 
At one of the yards i worked at we use to use linseed oil it is an amazing thing for there coat. i'm in ireland and i have seen them slip a guinness into a horse feed for a great iron boost. i personally would use linseed it smells real bad but does the trick.
 
I use soya oil, mainly for his coat rather than for energy or condition, I only give him 100ml a day and thats enough, but if you want it for energy then I guess you would need at least double that.
 
I add about a mugful of vegetable oil as I'm trying to fatten my boy up. He's only been on it for 4 weeks and he's putting a bit of weight on and his coat's fabulous!

100ml per 100kg bodyweight is the maximum amount of oil you can give a horse, before you have to start adding extra antioxidants such as vitamin E. 100ml per 100kg bw, is actually quite a lot of oil (typical 15.2hh about half a litre) so i doubt very much that you will need to worry about adding extra antioxidants!
 
Depends why you are adding it. If for example you have a horse with EPSM, then you would need to add 100ml per 100kg but if you are just adding it as a weight gain/skin conditioner then you will need significantly less, ie 100ml in total.

Yep, that helps! Purely for a bit of weight gain (aswell as his food of course), his coat condition is fab and so are his energy levels just needs a bit more fat on him!

I was going to post something similar...I see someone put vegetable oil, what about sunflower oil? Is corn oil the best? What's the best oil to use and how much do you start them at?
